Five games remained in the waning stages of the regular season, with the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team bent on completing a perfect run through the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division.
A key to this effort was last Tuesday”s lone regular-season encounter with Fayetteville-Manlius, who hung close most of the way, but lost, 11-7, to the Bees.
Between them, F-M’sAva Angello and Julianna Cogliandro won 11 of the game’s 18 draws, allowing for more possessions, though it was something the Hornets could not quite utilize to its full extent.
It also proved a two-person attack, Coglilandro scoring four times and Angello three times as no one else found the net, just a single assist credited to Melanie Steigerwald. Hannah Williamson finished with seven saves.
B’ville had five different goal-scorers, led by Brianna Peters’ four goals and Carlie Desimone’s three-goal hat trick.Mia Pozzi scored twice, while Sophia Muscolino and Grace Hollenbeck had single goals.
Back home to face Liverpool Thursday night, B’ville had a game far different than the 24-7 romp it authored against the Warriors late in April.
Here, the Warriors were within close range most of the night and did a better job against the Bees’ defense, but it still wasn’t quite enough as B’ville won by a 15-11 margin.
Mostly, the Bees won this game with its depth. Nine different players had goals and none more than Peters’ total of three as Desimone, with two goals and five assists, anchored the attack.
Grace Hollenbeck scored twice, as did Sophia Ianno and Caitlin Sacco. Emma Hollenbeck had a goal and two assists, with single goals going to Muscolino, Pozzzi and Sara Hunter.
To lead Liverpool’s effort, MaggieTifft amassed five goals. Abby Geary had three goals and one assist, while Gianna Carbone scored twice and added an assist. Mia Berthoff had one goal and one assist.
These wins made Saturday’s 16-8 defeat at Victor a bit easier to take. One of Section V’s strongest sides, the Blue Devils constantly found way through the Bees’ defenses as Muscolino got two goals and two assists, with Desimone and Grace Hollenbeck also converting twice and single goals going to Hunter and Ianno.
Early this week, B’ville would have back-to-back games against General Brown and Fayetteville-Manlius, then prepare for the Section III Class A playoffs.
