CENTRAL NEW YORK – A special winter for the Jordan-Elbridge wrestling team only got more so with its victory over a 12-team field in the Jan. 8 Port Byron Mid-Winter Classic that included Marcellus.
Picking up 182.5 points, the Eagles pulled away from Phoenix, who despite a small roster still managed 143 points for second place. With 88 points, the Mustangs took seventh place.
Six different J-E wrestlers made it to the championship round, and four of them won, with Isaac Svitavsky triumphant at 160 pounds when he pinned Phoenix’s Jacob Neupert in the second period.
With seconds remaining in his 138-pound final, Jack Smith was able to pin another Phoenix wrestler, Trenton Hoyt, while Dylan Nolan (110 pounds) and Jack Lamson (138 pounds) each claimed close decisions – Nolan 6-2 over Red Creek’s Bryan Sharkey, Lamson 5-2 over Phoenix’s Parker Allers.
To claim the lone Marcellus title at 126 pounds, Colin Scherer had to climb past J-E’s Henry Smith, which he did with an 8-0 shutout after the Eagles’ Jacob Ellsworth (118 pounds) lost a wild 19-10 final to Red Creek’s Ben Alton.
Marcellus also saw Dan Okhman reach the 152-pound final before Phoenix’s Ethan Bruno pinned him, with Adam Barbosa (152 pounds) edging Caleb Baldwin (North Rose-Wolcott) 6-4 for third place as Jayden Logudice, at 160 pounds, earned sixth place.
Nolan Jackson gave the Eagles a fourth-place finish at 126 pounds, while Jon Everhart (152 pounds) and Angelo Turo (172 pounds) each got pins to finish fifth, Turo doing so over Marcellus opponent Zach Grolling as Jacob LaForce was sixth at 132 pounds.
While that was going on, West Genesee went to the Greg Partridge Memorial Duals at Corning and posted a 3-1 record, second only to Marathon’s 4-0 mark.
In the decisive match, the Wildcats lost 42-27, to Marathon, but stlll had Maxx Fesinger (145 pounds) and Austin Fesinger (102 pounds) each earn pins. Logan Willis (126) and Omar Almlaiti (215 pounds) both had shutouts, with Jack Wade (138) edging Tim Morehouse 6-4.
Prior to that, WG had knocked off Addison 42-18 and Dryden 52-18, leading to a close match with host Corning that the Wildcats pulled off 32-27. Trailing late, the Wildcats won four of the last five bouts on the card, with Almlaiti blanking Brian Kirk 4-0, Austin Fesinger topping Dalton Webb 4-1 and Logan Willis, at 118, shutting out Tyler Farrand 10-0.
WG then lost last Wednesday to Liverpool 48-18, with Almlati and Austin Fesinger getting pins as Willis, moving down to 118, edged Rocco DeGilormo 4-2 and Colin McAvan, at 160, getting a 3-1 decision over Owen Atchie. Maxx Fesinger lost 1-0 to Jonah Geller and Wade fell 3-0 to Mohammed Yousuf.
J-E won last Wednesday over Southern Hills 56-12, with pins from Turo, Svitavsky, Chris Martinez (152 pounds) and Jon Everhart (160 pounds). Four other pins went to Nolan, Lamson, Jackson and Henry Smith, with Ellsworth routing Sye Stanton 17-6 and Jack Smith handling Colby LaBarge 13-3.
Marcellus won 51-16 over Chittenango that same night, highlighted by four straight pins from Scherer, Gavin Ciota (126), Alex Lostracco (138) and Chris Doshna (145), this following first-period falls from Jonas Kaczor at 285 and Donovan Fraher at 110. Ciota had the quickest pin, finshing off Kamryn Coonrod in 40 seconds.
