ONONDAGA COUNTY – Though it had a meet with Northern Cayuga canceled late last week, the Skaneateles girls swim team still had to feel quite good about an undefeated month – and even better about some of the times it has already posted.
The Lakers improved to 4-0 when it hosted Oswego Tuesday night and saw Hana Spaulding continue to dazzle in the sprint races during a 100-81 victory over the Buccaneers.
Having already swam the 50-yard freestyle in 24.04 seconds to beat Sydney DeLapp’s 25.28, Spaulding went to the 100 freestyle and, in 51.88 seconds, posted the fastest time in the state so far this season.
Not to be left out, Alice Spaulding took titles in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.99 and the 100 butterfly in 1:01.82 and joined her sister, along with Caitlin Comer and Ellie Springer, in tearing through the 200 freestyle relay in 1:41.18, yet again qualifying for the state meet.
Arianna Matthews was victorious in the 200 freestyle in 2:05.87, with Carlee Pitman earning 192.65 points to prevailin diving. Springer, Marcella Buchholz, Lili Winkelman and Ameila Musso won the 200 medley relay in 2:06.85.
Also, Winkelman went 1:16.79 to beat out Comer (1:17.07) in the 100 breaststroke as Marcella Buchholz was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:17.96 and Matthews got second (5:33.09) in the 500 freestyle.
That same night, West Genesee made its way to the win column when it topped Syracuse City 92-68.
Several different Wildcats won races, starting with Maddie Owczarzak going 2:22.47 in the 200 freestyle and Allison Shorstlef taking the 200 IM in 2:58.70.
After Lily Mauro put up 216.75 points in diving, Allison Putnam swam the 100 butterfly in 1:17 flat, Angie Gittschau won the 100 freestyle in 1:04.59 and Adriana Gill went 1:15.79 in the 100 backstroke. Putnam, Analiese Straub, Julianna Sagneri and Kayleigh Adams went 2:16.03 in the 200 medley relay.
Two nights later, WG returned home and fell to Cicero-North Syracuse 100-84. Putnam did take the 500 freestyle in 5:55.12 as Anna Ivery went 25.94 seconds to win the 50 freestyle, but the Northstars claimed every other individual race, with Kate Gucciardi (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly) and Brittany Wood (200 IM, 100 breaststroke) each prevailing twice.
WG has three more meets in five days next week against Jamesville-DeWitt, Christian Brothers Academy and Baldwinsville as Skaneateles hosts New Hartford on Tuesday.
