Since they were getting underway more than a month later than normal, time was precious for area high school girls tennis teams who wanted a complete 2020 season.
The rains stayed away long enough for West Genesee and Marcellus to both get in their first matches last weekend, with the Wildcats turning back Auburn 5-2 and the Mustangs shutting out Jordan-Elbridge 7-0.
Katie Viau and Angelina Llanos lead WG’s returning cast, both of them having qualified for the state championship tournament in doubles in 2019.
Against Auburn, Viau and Llanos played singles, with Viau handling the Maroons’ Alexandra Vitale 6-3, 6-0 and Llanos getting a 6-0, 6-1 romp over Claire Diffin. Kayla Latone lost 6-0, 6-2 to Ella Bouley.
Going 3-1 in doubles, WG had Alyssa Congel and Margaret Mello take out Abigail Carr and Emma Merkley 7-5, 6-3, while Madelyn Chuff and Isabelle Wells won 6-2, 6-3 over Rosalia Bartolotta and Erin Calkins.
And though Elianna Cui and Ava Amodio lost to Marisa Moore and Elizabeth Spin 6-0, 6-2, in fourth doubles Angelina Allen and Isabella Allen won in straight sets over Nora Solomon and Tayler Chadderdon.
Marcellus and J-E opened the season against other, and the Mustangs got going when, in first singles, the Mustangs’ Kathleen DeMarle handled the Eagles’ Anisa Bort 6-3, 6-1.
Colleen Marsh won over Lizzie Conrad 6-1, 6-1, while Danielle Copp roared past Gabrielle Skotinski 6-2, 6-0. Sophie Spitzer and Angelina Coleman got a 6-0, 6-0 doubles shutout of Leah Dixon and Laney Green.
In the closest of the doubles matches, Sarah Louer and Sophia Powless survived a tight first set to win 7-5, 6-2 over Ella Dwyer and Madelynn Maldonado.
It didn’t take as long for Casey Conklin and Sophia Shaw to get past Lexi Delfavero and Ireland Hill 6-1, 6-2, while Bella Clarke and Maddie Vetsch defeated Hannah Osborn and Laura Alcock 6-2, 6-0.
