It was left to the two boys golf teams at Fayetteville-Manlius to officially restart high school sports in Central New York, more than six months after COVID-19 halted it.
When the Green (varsity) and White (junior varsity) Hornets teed off on Sept. 23, they inaugurated a fall season which would unfold over the next month, hopefully fitting in all of their matches before it got too cold or wet to continue.
F-M Green won that opener 208-229 at the Cavalry Club, which will serve as a home venue this fall as Matt LaCombe led the way, matching par with a nine-hole total of 36.
Velton Perry finished solo second with a 41, while F-M White’s George LaCombe and August Larson matched the 43 from Andrew Heyman, with 44s scored by the trio of Seth Bailey, John Sommers and Alex Duggleby plus a 45 from Isaac Frechette.
Moving on to other opponents, F-M Green handled West Genesee’s Blue team 187-223 last Wednesday at Westvale.
Perry, shooting a 36, edged Matt LaCombe and Tobey Schulman (37 each) for individual honors. Sommers, with a 38, and Jack Antshel, with a 39, were close behind as Heyman shot 42.
In F-M White’s 202-226 defeat to Cicero-North Syracuse Blue last Wednesday at Lakeshore Country Club, Larson, Jason Carter and Sam Elbadawi each shot 44, but they trailed five Northstars, led by Austin Alberici, who had a 38.
Playing again on Thursday at Woodcrest, F-M White fell 205-223 to WG’s older Gold squad. Larson shot a 42, tied for third among individuals, while Carter had a 43 and the Wildcats’ Peyton Mullane matched par thanks to a 36.
Then, in Friday’s 190-201 win over Cicero-North Syracuse Green at Northern Pines, Perry needed a 36 to hold off Luke Weisiger and Matt LaCombe (37) atop the standings. Heyman and Sommers had rounds of 39.
Going head-to-head last Thursday, Jamesville-DeWitt got the best of its neighborhood clash with both teams from East Syracuse Minoa,the Red Rams topping the Spartans 189-235.
Peter Hatton’s 36 at the Links at Erie Village was one better than the 37 from Punn Chittaratlert. Tanner Burns and Julian Galletta both had 38, ahead of Matt Radford’s 40 and Trey Jacobson’s 43.
Even better for J-D was its 183-233 romp over Cortland on Friday at Drumlilns, Hatton and Chittaralert both finishing at 35 while Galletta picked up a 36. Burns earned a 38, while Blaise Anthis and Ian Delpha had matching totals of 38.
ESM Blue featured Zach Johnson shooting 38 to match Burns and Galletta, with Braedon Smith getting a 39, but no other Spartan broke 50, a number put up by Keegan Barry.
ESM Blue opened on n Sept. 25 against Oswego, where it lost 219-246 at the Links at Erie Village.
Johnson’s 41 was the low individual round, but the Buccaneers had the next six lowest totals, including 42s from Kevin Waters, Mike Douglas and Jack Hall. Logan Welch shot 47 for ESM as Smith contributed a 50.
A 221-235 defeat to Cortland followed last Wednesday at Willowbrook Golf Club, with Johnson’s 41 beaten only by a 38 from the Purple Tigers’ Andrew Partigianoni. Smith shot a 44 and Barry contributed a 48.
Christian Brothers Academy had its opener Sept. 24 against Mexico at Drumlins, with the Brothers pulling away from the Tigers to prevail 198-239.
Sweeping the top five spots, James Stanton posted a 36 for CBA, ahead of Emmet Kilmartin, whose 39 beat out Luke Snyder (40), Matt Porter (41) and Ryan Wendt (42) as Ryan Mosher got a 43 to lead Mexico.
Then the Brothers shot 219 last Monday to finish behind Cazenovia (211) and Skaneateles (206) as Tynan Jones led the way at Skaneateles Country Club, shooting 35 for the home side.
Off until last Thursday, CBA went to Millstone and handled Jordan-Elbridge 188-218. Joe Nicholson shot a 35, one shot ahead of the Eagles’ Jeremy Melli, with Dan Angelo and Jack MacLachlan each posting 37 and Peter Scuderi earning a 39 to round out the top five.
