Though the gap did close quite a bit in the second softball meeting this spring between Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool, the Northstars remain in charge of this long-time rivalry.
C-NS prevailed 12-6 over the Warriors last Wednesday at Syracuse University’s softball complex, to where the Northstars moved this home game as its fields continued to dry from early-week rains.
When they first met April 29, it went 18-3 in C-NS’s favor. The rematch threatened to go in a different direction when Liverpool netted a run in the bottom of the third to take a brief 1-0 lead.
But the Northstars countered with six runs in the fourth, and doubled that total in the three innings that followed as Brandi Feeney and Francesca LaRobardiere both smashed home runs and got two RBIs apiece.
Brooke Nicolaos doubled and drove in three runs, with Gianna Wameling getting three hits as she and Ally Ciafratta both got two RBIs. Jordyn Maldonado added two hits and an RBI.
Liverpool did manage 12 hits of its own, three each by Alicia Nash and Emma Terzini as Nash drove in two runs. Helen Nash added two hits and an RBI, scoring twice as Olivia Peta got an RBI.
While that was going on, Baldwinsville, who beat C-NS on May 8, returned to SCAC Metro action a week later and rallied for a 4-3 victory over West Genesee.
Trailing 2-0 after four innings, the Bees struck for a run in the fifth and then scored three times in the top of the sixth to move in front. Emma Johnson’s home run was the big blow as she got a pair of RBIs, with Kayla Young and Madison Ascioti also driving in runs.
Young pitched, too, and though she nearly saw her 4-2 lead vanish when WG netted a run in the bottom of the seventh, she got the final outs, having given up nine hits but earning 10 strikeouts.
B’ville then rallied for a 10-8 victory over Fayetteville-Manlius on Thursday, trailing 7-4 through two innings before getting a run in the third and then scoring five total runs in the sixth and seventh innings to move out in front.
With a home run and three RBIs, Young paced the Bees at the plate, while Johnson went four-for-five with a double and RBI. Kaycee Hawk and Mattison Phinney also had two-hit outings as Alyssa Dybacz added a double and RBI.
F-M rebounded to defeat B’ville 14-10 a day later, the Bees leading 9-6 before the Hornets scored four times in the sixth inning and then, after B’ville tied it again 10-10 in the sixth, waiting until the ninth inning for its decisive rally.
Meanwhile, it was C-NS’s turn to face West Genesee on Thursday, and the Northstars handled them 10-0, getting single runs in four different innings before a six-run seventh put the game away.
Corasaniti maintained the shutout despite giving up seven hits. C-NS had 17 hits, four by Alayna Harbaugh and three each by Maldonado and Nicoalos, who got three RBIs as Feeney, Harbaugh and Jenna Imbesi drove in two runs apiece.
Liverpool lost, 9-1, to Marcellus on Thursday afternoon, the lone run for the Warriors scored in the fourth inning as the Mustangs, up 2-1, got two runs in the sixth and five runs in the seventh to get away, led by Evelyn Webster’s four hits and four RBIs.
An 11-1 defeat to Oneida, the state’s no .4-ranked Class B team who beat C-NS earlier this season, followed as Indians pitcher Kyra Scholtzhauer blanked the Warriors after the first inning. A seven-run rally in the fourth helped Oneida break a 1-1 tie.
B’ville had a great shot at upending defending Class A sectional champion Jamesville-DeWitt on Saturday, but could not quite pull it off, falling 9-7 to the Red Rams.
However, the Bees did win 5-1 over Rome Free Academy that same day, scoring twice in the second inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and adding two runs in the fourth, plus a run in the fifth.
Combined, Young and Jordan Martin held the Black Knights to four hits. Dybacz hit a solo home run for B’ville as she and Khyra Wilbur both got two hits, with RBIs also going to Asciati and Phinney.
In a rematch Saturday night between C-NS and West Genesee, the Northstars won again, 14-6, scoring in every inning except the first. LaRobardiere hit another home run, getting three RBIs as Harbaugh drove in four runs. Feeney added a triple and two RBIs.
