Though most of the area’s high school track and field athletes took a breather during the April school break, Jamesville-DeWitt was quite active.
The boys and girls Red Rams both made their way to Wednesday’s fifth annual Westhill Spring Break Invitational and earned plenty of top finishes before the meet was done.
Laetticia Bazile claimed the victory in the girls high jump, beating more than 40 other challengers as she cleared 5 feet 4 inches with fewer misses than Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Danielle Fisk.
Eva Wisniewski tied for fourth in the pole vault, clearing 8’6”, and also was 13th in the long jump with 14’7 ½” Monica Hernandez-Olivera finished 12th in the 100-meter dash in 13.75 seconds, with Samantha Aitken 15th in the 2,000-meter steeplechase.
Moving to the boys meet, J-D had Fidel Martinez nearly win the 800-meter run, going 2:02.79 to top everyone except Central Square’s Frank Derdzinski, who won in 2:00.67.
Martinez, Haberle Conlon, Nico Stella and Caleb Smith finished third in the 4×400 relay in 3:39.24. Smith also had a seventh-place long jump of 19’6” as Nick Dekaney was ninth with 19’ ¾”.Conlon got seventh place in the 200-meter dash in 24.08 seconds and was eighth in the 100-meter dash in 12.03 seconds, with Dekaney (12.13) 11th.
James Richer, in the discus, threw it 119’7” to finish third, just behind the winning 125’1” from Westhill’s Evan Ballard. Richer was also 10th in the shot put with 39’3 ½”, just behind teammate Caleb Patterson, who was eighth with 39’8 ¼”. Ben Virgo was ninth in the pole vault, topping 9 feet, while Sam Smith was 13th in the mile in 4:50.66.
