In the first full week of January, all kinds of winter weather threatened to interrupt the Baldwinsville girls basketball team’s attempts to make a mid-season turnaround.
Losses to Nottingham and West Genesee, and the continued absence of Katie Pascale from its lineup, had left the Bees at 6-5 heading into last Wednesday’s game at Fayetteville-Manlius, itself a game pushed back 24 hours by winter weather.
The delay did little to warm up B’ville’s attack, but its defense was nearly perfect during the first half, helping to build an advantage that was required in the late going as it held off the Hornets’ late comeback to win 39-36.
All through the early going, F-M had great difficulty operating against a voracious Bees defense, including just three points in the second quarter as B’ville led 19-11 at halftime.
Eventually, the Bees’ lead grew to 32-21 going to the fourth quarter, when F-M made a furious push, led by Alexis Schneider, who collected 11 rebounds to go with her nine points.
But the Bees held on at the end, its modest production spread around as Jordan Roy led with 11 points, with Alex Bednarczyk (nine points), Courtney Clute (eight points) and Hannah Mimas (seven points) close behind.
Also for F-M, Elena Paolini also had nine points, adding four rebounds and three assists as Lexie Roe, held to five points, still managed 11 rebounds and Lily Fish had seven points and five rebounds.
B’ville moved its game against Corcoran to Monday night, right before a visit from Liverpool Tuesday and a Friday-night trip to Henninger.
