It proved quite a good start to the post-season for each of the Skaneateles indoor track and field teams during Wednesday night’s Onondaga High School League Division II championships at SRC Arena.
For the girls Lakers, who earned 118 points, only Tully, with 142 points, did better in the 10-team field as Hannibal (60 points) was far back in third place.
Mia Grasso won three different events, including the high jump, where by clearing 4 feet 10 inches she beat Hannibal’s Rebecca Marsh (4’8”0 by two inches.
On the track, Grasso claimed the 600-meter run in 1:42.24, more than six seconds ahead of the field as Melissa Biver was fifth in 1:54.20. Later, in the 300-meter dash, Grasso, in 43.05 seconds, got another title as Maddie Peterson (44.40 seconds) completed a 1-2 sweep.
Emme Conan gave Skaneateles its first race win of the meet in the 55-meter dash, edging out Faith Heritage’s Jasmine DelPano as both posted 7.80 seconds, but Conan (7.795) was one-thousandths of a second faster than DelPano (7.796).
Bella Capozza won the 55-meter hurdles in 10.16 seconds, with younger sister Isabella Capozza (11.32 seconds) beating out Ellie Peterson (11.43 seconds) for fifth place.
Skaneateles won the 4×800 relay by having Elyse Osmun, Natalie Condon, Isabella Capozza and Georgia McSwain go 11:18.59 to hold off Tully (11:23.35).
In the 4×400 relay, Melissa Biver, Jessica Patalino, Sarah Euto and Graeson Landsberg got second place in 4:49.55 but earned 10 points for first place since the winner, South Jefferson (4:33.98), was outside the OHSL sphere.
Condon needed 5:14.05 to grab second place in the 1,500-meter run behind Tully star Brooke Rauber (5:05.16). McSwain was fifth in the 3,000-meter run in 11:39.79, with Nicole DeRosa 10th. Osmun took fifth place in the 1,000-meter run in 3:41.59.
In the weight throw, Reagan Evans, with a season-best throw of 27’3 ½”, rose to third place as Edan Howard was fourth with 25’7 ½”. Nieve Morse was fifth in the shot put with a toss of 24’2 ½”, with Howard 11th and Evans 15th. Peterson was seventh in the triple jump.
Meanwhile, the Skaneateles boys indoor track team earned 55 points for fourth place, with Hannibal (122.5 points) holding off Tully and Jordan-Elbridge for the top spot.
Luke Rathgeb won the first race on the card for the boys Lakers, going 10:05.01 in the 3,200-meter run to edge Hannibal’s Ben Dennison (10:05.28) at the line. Caleb Bender finished seventh, but was sixth in the mile (5:01.64) behind Rathgeb, who took fourth place in 5:00.07.
Brahm Malcolm joined in when he won the 55 hurdles, his time of 8.51 seconds half a second better than Hannibal’s John Ruggio (9.01), a big gap for a sprint event. In the long jump, Malcolm finished third, going 17’7 ½”.
Malcolm, Jacob Nesbitt, Cross Bianchi and Tahjin Blackiston were second in the 4×200 in 1:43.85, just behind Jordan-Elbridge’s 1:40.61 as the Eagles swept all three boys relay events. Blackiston also finished ninth in the long jump.
Ryan Willcox, clearing 5’4”, finished fourth in the high jump. Sam McClintic, Josh Reed, Levi Carvalho and Will Swarts were sixth in the 4×400 in 4:29.69. Connor Gell took sixth in the 600 in 1:40.64 as Lawrence Gray was 10th.
Thomas Smith was seventh in the 55 sprint, with Bianchi 10th and Nesbitt 11th. Jared Calipari was seventh and Tyler Priest ninth in the shot put while improving to eighth in the weight throw ahead of Luke Peterson in 12th place. Carvalho got ninth place in the 300.
