Some of the area’s high school boys tennis teams managed to sneak in their first matches of the 2017 season before the weather got too wet again.
Jamesville-DeWitt went up against Central Square last Monday afternoon, and the Red Rams did not drop a point in a 7-0 shutout of the Redhawks.
Among the four singles matches, Harshal Nanavati led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 romp over Jared Smith. Somil Aggarwal beat Logan Foster 6-1, 6-2, with Druv Nanavati handling Victor Lassere 6-0, 6-2 and Essex Glowaki beating Austin Grosso by those exact same scores.
Moving to the doubles side, it got even better for J-D as the teams of Robert Dottetrer-Peter Hatton, Ishan Gajra-Tyler Glowaki and Dan Frank-Dhruv Thota all won by 6-0, 6-0 margins, not dropping a sinlge game.
Christian Brothers Academy won twice in the opening week, starting with a 5-0 shutout over Syracuse East last Monday afternoon. The shutout was saved in third singles, where David Hoag had to go to three sets to beat Ehmoemo Qui 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
Otherwise, Dean Vlassis and Ben Vlassis each won 6-0, 6-0 singles matches over, respectively, Hanh Doung and John Hso, while CBA’s doubles teams of Tom Daviau-Zach Popp and Milan Gupta-Shivam Nanavati both claimed their own straight-set wins, Gupta and Nanavati topping Nick Lozapone and Kyaw Myo 6-4, 6-3.
Back on March 30, Manlius-Pebble Hill got underway against Westhill, finding success in singles, but not quite enough in a 3-2 defeat to the Warriors.
Trilok Reddy routed Andrew Doner 6-0, 6-1, while Dan Braverman handled Dan Ferrara 6-1, 6-1. However, Charlie Mann lost, 6-2, 6-4, to Jackson Bradley, and the Warriors won both doubles matches as Keerthi Martzyn and Dan Mezzalingua fell to Colin Catone and Tom Chaddock 6-4, 6-0, with Matt Roberson and Harry Chen losing to Ryan Rolince and Mike Ferrara 6-1, 6-2.
Then CBA took its turn against Westhill and beat the Warriors 4-1, with the Vlassis brothers again not allowing a game in their singles matches as Dean beat Doner and Ben topped Dan Ferrara, while Hoag beat Jacob Fricano 6-0, 6-1.
However, Rolince and Mike Ferrara prevented the shutout for Westhill, beating Gupta and Nanavati 7-5, 6-2, while Daviau and Popp handled Catone and Bradley 6-3, 6-2.
