Already off to a 2-0 start, the Marcellus girls basketball team made it three in a row when it hosted Mexico last Tuesday night, relying on a steady attack and lots of defense to pull away and beat the Tigers 55-34.
Even with 18 points from Bayley Wills, Mexico struggled to hit baskets on a regular basis. In fact, the Mustangs did not allow more than 10 points in any single quarter, allowing its own offense time to steadily get away from the Tigers.
Eve Hughes did it all, from 18 points to four blocks, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Liz White was just as versatile with 12 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals, while Mei LaMarre had seven points and Hannah Durand got six points. Lauren Young got five rebounds as Grace Hoey earned three rebounds and three assists, and Sydney Lewis contributed five rebounds and four assists.
To start its week, Solvay hosted Auburn, taking a 51-32 defeat to the Maroons. Held to five points in the first quarter, the Bearcats would see every comeback attempt in the second and third periods thwarted.
Aleah Yaizzo did produce 12 points and four rebounds, adding two blocks and two steals. Elle Hodge added eight points, three steals and three rebounds, while Nadea Davis had five points and Brielle Bagozzi five rebounds. For Auburn, Stefanie Gera gained 17 points and Jania Freeman got 13 points.
Still at home to face Skaneateles Thursday night, Solvay inched closer to the win column, but could not quite get there in a 48-40 defeat to the Lakers.
Here, things were close until the second quarter, when the Skaneateles offense erupted and it outscored the Bearcats 23-9. that made it 31-10 at halftime, and Solvay spent the entire second half chipping away at that big margin, with limited success.
Hodge did get a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Yaizzo contributed 15 points. No other player had more than the four points put up by Davis as she got five rebounds, too. Camille Devereaux added four blocks as, for the Lakers, Olivia Dobrovosky led the way with 17 points, including three 3-pointers.
In its only action last week, Jordan-Elbridge hosted Hannibal last Wednesday night and took a 59-32 defeat to the Warriors.
Most of the Warriors’ margin built up over the first three periods as Katie Pitcher, with 18 points, and Mackenzie Mattison, with 16 points, paced the visitors. On the Eagles’ side, Alexis Braun and Emily Klock led with eight points apiece.
