Though it made a spirited comeback in the latter stages, the Westhill-Bishop Ludden girls track and field team could not quite prevent Skaneateles from earning a fourth consecutive section III Class B-1 championship.
In Thursday’s sectional meet, the host Warriors had 135 points, just behind the Skaneateles total of 144 points. Marcellus, with 38.33 points, settled for sixth place, while Solvay was seventh with 22 points.
Westhill-Ludden swept the top three in the 100-meter hurdles, with Katie DeVeyra prevailing in 16.25 seconds over Katherine Doherty (16.97 seconds) and Jayanna Monds (17.05 seconds) as Alyssa Holstein was fifth in 17.34 seconds.
Doherty would later win the pole vault by clearing 10 feet 6 inches, while Noelle Coolican tied for second, topping 9’6” as DeVeyra and Mary Kate Washburn were seventh and eighth, respectively, though both cleared 8’6”.
Ultimately, Westhill-Ludden got hurt by Skaneateles winning every relay event. Haylei Coolican, Alaina Kenny, Megan O’Reilly and Meghan Evans were second (10:24.82) to the Lakers (10:20.50) in the 4×800, while in the 4×100 the Lakers won again as Doherty, Monds, Washburn and Olivia Daigneau were third in 51.71 seconds.
In the 4×400, O’Reilly, Daigneau, Annibel Coolican and Zoe Fortin were third in 4;23.64. Fortin later would take fourth place in the long jump with a best attempt of 15’3” as DeVyra (14’7 ¼”) finished ninth, while Coolican was fourth in the triple jump, going 31’11”, and Fortin was fifth with 31’7 ¾”.
Genny Corcoran grabbed second place (11:23.62) behind Cazenovia’s Meggie Hart (10:59.80) in the 3,000-meter run, while Kenny was third in 11:30.18 and Kylie Nowicki was fourth in 11:40.16. Haylei Coolican earned second place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:47.77, with Kenny fourth in 8:09.12 and Carmella Carr (8:24.61) fifth as Evans settled for eighth place.
Liz Kessler was fourth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:08.08, with Corcoran fifth in 5:10.94. Annibel Coolican tied for third in the high jump, clearing 4’10”, and had a fourth-place time of 2:30.40 in the 800-meter run, with Daigneau fifth in 2:32.06.
Marcellus got a win in the shot put when Johanna Sylcox threw it 32’11 ½” to beat a field that included Washburn, who was fourth by going 30’4 ½”. Mary-Catherine Coon was second in the 100-meter dash in 12.99 seconds, inches behind Skaneateles’ Amanda Wetmore, who won in 12.95 seconds. Coon got sixth place in the high jump, topping 4’8”.
The Mustangs also had Haley Randall take second place in the pentathlon with 1,909 points, trailing only South Jefferson’s Kealy DeForest (2,312 points) as the Warriors’ Mackenzie Powers was third with 1,852 points and Emma Bryant (1,544 points) was sixth.
Tora Fey, Violet Mancavage, Emma Garn and Julianna Szczech were fifth in the 4×800 in 11:16.09, while Morgan Gould took fourth place in the 3,000 in 11:45.41, ahead of Eeva Kortesoja (11:49 flat) in sixth place. Gould was also sixth (5:12.01) in the 1,500 and Crystal Silliman was sixth in the 800 in 2:33.20.
Solvay’s Katie Harrington contended in the 400-meter hurdles for the Bearcats, getting second place in 1:07.78 as Skaneateles’ Mia Grasso won in 1:06.58. Harrington also tied Anibel Coolican in the high jump by clearing 4’10”.
Samantha Waters contended behind Sylcox in the shot put, ultimately taking third place with a toss of 30’6 ½”. Jackie Allen was seventh (83’6”) and Sabrina Garnett 12th in the discus. Cienna Goldman was ninth in the 100-meter dash in 13.80 seconds and 11th in the 200-meter dash.
