When the boys and girls golf teams from Marcellus and Westhill take part in their respective Section III tournaments early next week, they will leave behind intense head-to-head match-ups Monday that were split – won by the Mustangs on the boys side, and by the Warriors on the girls side.
The boys match took place at Marcellus Golf Club, and on its home venue the Mustangs flourished, especially Carter Austin, who put up his best round of the season as the feature part of a 208-234 victory over the Warriors that pushed Marcellus to 10-0 on the season.
In their first match on May 3 at Camillus Country Club, the Mustangs had pulled it out 213-221 with a 39 from Austin, but in the rematch, played in cool, windy conditions, Austin went under part and finished with a nine-hole total of 34.
Marcellus, in fact, had the three best individual scores as Jay Colella, with a 40, and Frank Szczech, with a 41, finished ahead of Westhill’s Sean Dadey (44) and Tim Alcaro (45). Nick Sonnacchio had a 46 and Tim Sheridan a 47, while David Bosak had a 48, ahead of Tom Fiacchi and Jerrod Gates, who each shot 53.
Westhill saw Mike Laszlo and Nick Sauro put up matching totals of 49, just ahead of Jared Zion, who finished with a 50. Jake Mullen added a 51 and Josh Marshall posted a 54.
With each side having lost just twice in 2016, the second girls golf match this spring between Westhill and Marcellus was bound to be as intense as the first one on April 18, which the Warriors claimed by a seven-shot margin, 201-208.
Now, the venue had changed, to Camillus Country Club, but the result was the same, Westhill getting solid round from Shannon Bunce and Madeleine Jones at the front of the pack and hanging on for a 215-225 victory over the Mustangs.
Bunce posted the low individual nine-hole score of 47, while Jones, with a 50, finished one shot clear of Marcellus’ top individual, Mary Colella, who finished with a 51.
Gabbi LoCourto and Ellie Masterpole made sure Westhill got away, LoCourto shooting a 52 and Masterpole contributing a 56 to match the Mustangs’ Hannah Abbott. Elise LaBombard and Grace Alexander both shot 59 for Marcellus.
Though her team didn’t beat Westhill, Mary Colella earned a victory of greater importance when she took home the individual championship from Wednesday’s Onondaga High School League Tournament at Woodcrest Golf Club.
Shooting an 18-hole score of 85, Colella was the lone golfer to break 90 as she beat CBA’s Megan McKeen (91) by six shots. Bunce finished fourth with a 95 to lead Westhill, while LoCourto finished with a 97.
Abbott earned a 99 to tie Jamesville-DeWitt’s Lena Jones for sixth place, while Kendall Koloski had a 117, one shot ahead of Erin Hass, and LaBombard had a 122. Westhill’s Angela Vigliotti finished with a 108 as Jones struggled to a 120 and Lydia Stevenson finished with a 129.
