CAZENOVIA — Playing on back-to-back nights in the last full week of the regular season, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team was unable to upend a pair of traditional powers.
The Lakers brought a 9-6 record into last Tuesday’s match against undefeated Marcellus and got overwhelmed 25-8 and 25-11 in the first two sets.
A long third set followed with Cazenovia nearly extending the match, but Marcellus pulling it out 31-29 to complete the sweep.
Caryn Gagnon led the Lakers with 10 assists as Becca Ziemba got four assists. Up front, Carleigh Szalach put up five kills, with Maren Smith earning four kills and Eliza Gurney getting three kills.
To lead Marcellus, Jenna Mattison earned 27 assists, while Elaine Grattan had 23 digs and Brooklyn Finnarty gained 12 kills, plus 12 digs.
Then it was Cazenovia against its fellow Lakers from Skaneateles a night later. After dropping the opening set 25-13, Cazenovia claimed the second set 26-24 to pull even.
Skaneateles took over from there, though, claiming another 25-13 decision in the third set before closing it out, 25-20, in the fourth set. Alice Bender, with 17 assists, and Ayla Pascal, with 11 kills, led Skaneateles as Rory Comer earned seven aces and 15 digs and Laci Gaidis had 24 digs.
