The Christian Brothers Academy track and field teams took part in a pair of large-scale meets during the week of the school break, flourishing in both of them.
First, the Brothers would have a fine showing during last Tuesday’s Westhill-Bishop Ludden Spring Break Invitational, tying for third place in the boys meet with 53 points and getting to fifth place with 35 points in a field of 11. Westhill-Ludden (boys) and Tully (girls) finished first in their respective divisions.
Tom SanGiacomo swept the sprints, going 11.38 seconds to beat the field by more than half a second in the 100-meter dash where Gavin Collins (12.14 seconds) was fourth. Then, in the 200-meter dash, SanGiacomo posted 22.81 seconds, exactly one second ahead of Jordan-Elbridge’s Ethan Kinney (23.81 seconds) in the runner-up spot.
Another victory came from Nikhil Reddy in the 800-meter run, as Reddy finished in 2:06.50 to hold off West Genesee’s Russ Graziano (2:06.63) at the line as Tim Schmitt finished fifth in 2:12.68 and Josh Pusci was ninth.
Shawn Moreth took third in the triple jump, going 35 feet 5 inches and cleared 5 feet in the high jump for another third-place effort. Will Bianchi got fourth place in the mile in 5:11.92, with Dan Melvin (5:14.24) in sixth place. Adam Cantor was 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Kiana Ferguson was victorious in the girls long jump, her leap of 16 feet 3 inches edging Tully’s Jessica Donald (16’2 ½”) by half an inch. Cory Knox was ninth and Ellisa Kempisty ninth.
Moving to the triple jump, Kempisty won here, going 31’6 ½” as another Tully athlete, Mackenzie Delles, was second, going 30’11 ¼”. Ferguson also was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.31 seconds.
CBA also won the girls 4×400 relay, where Anna Schug, Kate LaCasse, Olivia Morganti and Claire Barbagos finished in 4:07 flat, with second-place Skaneateles (4:15.89) nearly nine seconds back. Lea Kyle was sixth in the 1,500 in 5:18 flat, with Lucy Person in 11th place.
Four days later, CBA’s girls side returned to the same neighborhood, but this time visited Marcellus for the invitational meet it co-hosted with Skanetaeles. Though no team scores were kept, the Brothers again would have an impact.
Nafysa Williams, in particular, enjoyed the day, winning the high jump by clearing 5 feet 2 inches, with Faith Heritage’s Charlotte Matzal (5 feet) in second place. Kempisty contended in the triple jump, ending up in third place with a top attempt of 32’2”as Watertown’s Janiesia Crockett (36’7 ¾”) prevailed.
Elsewhere at Marcellus, Lea Kyle made her way to fourth place in the 400 hurdles in 1:12.93. Morganti got to fifth place in the 400 sprint in 1:02.16. Bri Pucci had a 10th-place time of 2:41.51 in the 800.
