The format was different, but the results were the same – a victory for the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team.
Having prevailed in the John DiMao Invitational at Colgate University three days earlier, the Lakers returned to Colgate Friday for the fourth Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association Partner Relays of the winter.
Picking up a total of 94 points, the Lakers dominated distance running events and held off Clinton (85 points) for the top spot, while also rising to third place in the boys event with 48 points behind Clinton (84 points) and Rome Free Academy (66 points).
Clara Rowles took first in the 1,500-meter run in five minutes, 3.40 seconds, nearly 13 seconds ahead of the field and, with Zoe Shephard, taking team honors in 10:28.83. Megan Henderson and Maria Stalder won the 1,000-meter run, going 6:44.38 between them as Clinton was second in 6:53 flat.
Then, in the 3,000-meter run, Meggie Hart roared to victory in 10:55.24, the only time under 11 minutes, joining Adrien Owens as the Lakers, in 23:16.99, pulled away from New Hartford (23:48.14) by more than half a minute.
Kirsten Underwood, second (7.65 seconds) to the Black Knights’ Tekitha Posey-Barry (7.62 seconds) in the 55-meter dash, paired with Brenna Hughes for second on the team side in 14.88 seconds.
Underwood went on to win the individual 300-meter dash in 44.57 seconds and, with Delaney Yates, get second place (1:32.05) behind Clinton (1:31.51) on the team end. Yates and Scout Mueller were second in the 55-meter hurdles in 20.48 seconds to RFA’s 19.66 seconds.
Stalder and Olivia McEntee paired for third place in the 600-meter run in 3:32.98, with Chittenango seeing Kaitlyn Swain get second place by herself in 1:43.77 and fourth on the team side with McKenzie Dombroski in 3:34.32.
In field events, Katie Robbins and Jill Britton tied Clinton’s Victoria Gudnaya and Kylie Trunfio for first in the pole vault, each of those pairs able to clear 14 feet 6 inches.
Robbins and Maddy Gavitt covered 59’7 ½” in the triple jump, second only to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s 60’2”. This came after Gavitt and Jess Macheda were third in the long jump, going 28’2 ½” between them. Macheda, paired with Tori Fischer, tied for second in the long jump, clearing 9’4”, just behind Clinton’s 9’6”, while Fischer and Caeli Carroll were fourth in the weight throw with 51’10 ¾”.
Moving to the boys end, Cazenovia did most of its main damage in field events, starting in the long jump, where Alec Boone and Ray Satchwell won with combined leaps of 36 feet 3 ½ inches, leaving RFA (35’10 ¼”) and the field behind them. Boone and Satchwell added a third (69’5 ½”) in the triple jump.
Also for the Lakers, Sawyer Hunt and Will Kmetz were second in the shot put with total throws of 79’10”, though RFA won with 88’11”. Will Huftalen and Dan McKillop each cleared 8’6” in the pole vault, and at a total of 17 feet they were runner-up to Clinton’s 23-foot effort.
Boone and Cooper Coleman were third in the 300 in a combined 1:20.61, with Hunt and Nate Spangler fourth (71’11 ¾”) in the weight throw. Satchwell and Jake Robbins were third (10’4”) in the high jump.
Chittenango’s Nick Stanton won the boys 55 sprint in exactly seven seconds, joining Devan Myers as the Bears tied for fifth on the team side.
