Like all of the area’s other wrestling teams, Baldwinsville could not afford to sit around idle, the way so many other students do during the holiday break.
Instead, the Bees once again made the trip to Dolgeville High School to take part in the Mountain Duals, where 15 teams tested each other over the course of two days early last week.
B’ville did quite well, too, going 6-2 with equal 3-1 marks in each half of the tournament. Of the participating Section III sides, only Adirondack, with a 7-1 mark, fared better as Brockport (Section V) recorded the lone 8-0 sweep during the Mountain Duals.
To start with, the Bees handled Merrimack 60-15, and then went on to face Amsterdam, where points were a little tougher to attain for B’ville, but it still handled the Rams by a 48-18 margin.
They started at 145 pounds, and Tom Fuzia’s pin initiated a sweep of the first five bouts that included pins from David Rush (152 pounds), Spencer Woods (160 pounds) and Dan Fawwaz (170 pounds), with John Petrelli (182 pounds) edging Jake Roedecker 3-2.
Dan Wicks (220 pounds) topped Nelson Quinoses 4-2, and with a 30-18 lead B’ville swept the last four bouts, too, with pins from Jake Naples (120 pounds) and Jeremy Pond (138 pounds) as Kevin Lewis (126 pounds) beat Adam Tatum 6-1 and Tyler Patrick (138 pounds) handled John Companion 7-0.
Then B’ville ran into Brockport and lost, 45-27, but finished the first half of the tournament on a good note by beating Batavia 51-27. Most of those points against Batavia came by forfeits to Petrelli, Lewis, Rush, Alex Bowen (220 pounds), Mike Spicer (285 pounds) and Jacob Cavallo (106 pounds), though Naples and Patrick earned pins.
On the second day, B’ville held off Beekmantown by a score of 39-30, and then took another blemish against Adirondack, falling to the Wildcats 54-22. But the Bees rolled from there, routing Little Falls 59-3 and finishing with a 43-26 victory over Central Valley Academy.
The Little Falls match included pins by Spicer, Patrick, Rush and Petrelli, with Dan Fawwaz (170 pounds) topping Tyler Douglas 6-3 and Naples beating Lorenzo Scarano 7-2 as Bowen, moving down to 195, got a 9-1 win over Dalton Cleary.
With four bouts to go against Central Valley, B’ville trailed, 26-22, but went in front with Woods pinning Josh Klosner at the end of the second period. Then Fawwaz took just 57 seconds to pin Trent Ingraham, Petrelli blanked Jacob Wheet 6-0 and Bowen claimed a forfeit.
Prior to that, Wicks had opened with his own 6-0 win over Nate Case and Spicer beat Gunar Holmberg 2-0. Zach Hahn (113 pounds) pinned Anderson Klosner in 3:32 as Patrick claimed a forfeit and Lewis got a 12-0 win over Max Reisel.
Another busy stretch awaits B’ville this week, from Wednesday’s meet at West Genesee to another two-day tournament this weekend when it goes to Canastota for the Fallen Heroes Tournament,
