Climbing back to the no. 2 state Class A ranking (right behind West Genesee), the Christian Brothers Academy girls lacrosse team began tuning up for the Section III playoffs.
Hosting East Syracuse Minoa last Tuesday night at Alibrandi Stadium, the Brothers dominated in all phases of the game, roaring past the Spartans 19-2.
Already with an 8-1 halftime advantage, CBA kept adding to it, seeing six different players record multiple goals in a well-balanced attack led by Emily Ehle and Katie Anderson, who each had three goals and one assist.
Rachel Vercillo scored twice, adding a pair of assists. Sam McKenna, Olivia Penoyer and Alexandria Fess also had two-goal outings, with Rachel Ziemba adding a goal and two assists. Evie Lopoo, Claire Jeschke and Morgan Riley also found the net, with Meredith Strott limited to one assist.
Two nights later, CBA faced Marcellus, whose coach, Dick Lundblad, had won his 200th career game earlier in the week –but the Brothers didn’t care much, defeating the Mustangs 16-4.
Marcellus was playing its third game in four days. Knowing this, CBA set a frenetic pace and wore down the Mustangs’ defenders, racing to an 11-3 halftime lead and cruising from there.
Ehle, by herself, outscored Marcellus, finishing with five goals, with Strott stepping up thanks to her four goals and two assists. Maddie Cook added a three-goal hat trick as McKenna and Grace Huslander each scored twice. Penoyer and Annie O’Brien earned single goals.
Before running into CBA, ESM began its run through the homestretch 24 hours earlier, at Cortland, where it fought hard to beat the Purple Tigers 12-9.
A back-and-forth first half saw the Spartans squeeze into a 6-5 lead. Then it fended off all of Cortland’s charges behind a big night from Cindy Brownson, who put in four goals.
Janee DeLuca, Brigid McGinley, Jenna Kenney and Ashley Scalzo also found the net for ESM. Shea Swartout led the Purple Tigers with four goals and three assists.
Then ESM lost a tough 10-9 decision to Oswego on Thursday night, unable to rally from a 7-4 halftime deficit. Kate McGarrity scored twice for the Spartans, adding an assist, while Scalzo, McGinley, DeLuca, Marissa Englebrecht and Cindy Brownson also got goals.
Jamesville-DeWitt resumed action on Thursday night and lost a tough 8-7 decision to Fulton. The Red Raiders’ defense was the story, holding the Red Rams to two goals in the first half and doing enough in the latter stages to withstand J-D’s comeback.
Carly Stone got a three-goal hat trick for the Rams, while Jessica Wipper, Caroline Kopp, Lizzie O’Brien and Meg Hair had one goal apiece. Kailen Prosak had 10 saves, but Fulton counterpart Kaylin Pafumi got 15 saves, with McKenna Chesbro and Jordan Coulon each recording three goals and one assist to lead Fulton’s offense.
Fayetteville-Manlius took its second shot at West Genesee last Tuesday, and unlike the boys a couple of hours later, the girls could not pull off its own upset, taking an 18-7 defeat to the Wildcats.
For a while in the first half, the game was tight. WG, coming off a loss to Skaneateles on May 2, only led 5-3 before closing the half on a 6-1 run, from which F-M could not recover.
Mary Trop and Jane Cote still managed to score three goals apiece. Meg Kincaid had the other goal as Allison Macrae got two assists and Jamison Seabury added an assist. Constantly under attack, Aubrey Deveau made 11 saves as Madisyn Kittell (five goals) and Grace Osterdale (four goals) led the Wildcats’ efforts.
It went better on Friday night, F-M handling Liverpool for the second time this season in an 11-4 decision on home turf that was close for a while before the Hornets outscored the Warriors 6-1 in the second half.
Staying in good form, Cote managed four goals and one assist. Trop, Kincaid and Amanda Cramer each scored twice, with Trop adding three assists and Kincaid a pair of assists. Seabury also had three assists as Macrae earned one goal and one assist.
F-M met Pittsford on Saturday afternoon, and lost by the same 11-4 margin as it did to Liverpool, finding the net just once in the second half as Trop, Seabury, Macrae and Cramer earned one goal apiece. Jessica Aspinall and Sydney DeGirolamo found the assist column.
Bishop Grimes-Bishop Ludden pulled away for one of its easiest wins of the season last Monday, taking out the Chittenango Bears by a score of 15-5.
Up 7-2 after a dominant first half on both ends, Ludden-Grimes kept it going behind Teresa Shattuck’s five goals and two assists, while Molly McInerney stepped up, scoring four times. Jennifer Vazquez had three goals and one assist as Kellie Byrne got two goals and three assists, with Katy McInerney also earning three assists.
A 14-8 defeat to Tully followed on Wednesday, each half a 7-4 affair as Shattuck did all she could, with five goals and one assist. Vazquez earned two goals, with Katy McInerney getting four assists.
But another double-digit margin was found on Friday, Ludden-Grimes hammering Jordan-Elbridge 19-8 as Shattuck accumulated 13 points through her seven goals and six assists.
Vazquez scored four times, with Byrne and Katy McInerney each getting three-goal hat tricks and McInerney adding three assists. Emma Driscoll contributed a pair of goals.
