After a fourth-place finish in the Dec. 7 Andersen Tournament at Cicero-North Syracuse, the Baldwinsville wrestling team resumed its sweep over CNY Counties League foes.
In fact, the Bees never lost a match on the mat during Wednesday night’s league meet against West Genesee at Baker High School gym, leading to a 78-6 romp over the Wildcats.
It started at 220 pounds with three consecutive pins, with Joe Nasoni setting the tone as he took 1:33 to finish off Keisean Canery. At 285 pounds, Marcel Penfield pinned Ethan Coates midway through the second period, while Kevin Lewis (99 pounds) recorded a 44-second fall over Marcello Barbuto.
B’ville’s lone blemish was a forfeit at 106 pounds, but Tyler Patrick (113 pounds), Pat O’Neill (132 pounds) and Nick Stanton (195 pounds) also took forfeits, and the Bees won every other match on the mat, most of them in convincing fashion.
Josh Peck, at 120 pounds, blanked Mike Linton 10-0, right before David Rush pinned 126-pound opponent Casey Bedell in just 19 seconds.
Kevin Paul, moved up to 138 pounds, won his featured match over Tyler Heggelke in a 15-0 technical fall that took 5:12 to complete. In that same 5:12 span, Connor Ross (145 pounds) pinned Odae Badwan.
With 26 seconds left in their match, Chad McArdell (152 pounds) pinned WG’s Liam Kotas, with Steve Petrelli (160 pounds) getting his fall over Shayne Middleton in 3:30. Devon Buyck (170 pounds) took 53 seconds to pin Trevor Brown as, in the closest match of the meet, Gunnar Sutphen (182 pounds) held off Dalton Elias 7-3.
B’ville would head north, through the snow, to Dexter for Saturday’s General Brown Duals, where it would go 4-1, rolling through most of the competition – but losing to the hosts, 49-30, in the decisive match of the meet.
Against General Brown, the Bees lost the first seven matches, ending matters early before Paul won a tough 3-2 decision over Ryan Snow at 138. Ross promptly pinned Ricci Nitali in 51 seconds, while McArdell shut out Kyle O’Connor 7-0.
Devon Buyck, wrestling at 170 pounds, needed just 46 seconds to pin Gavin Kovalik, with Sutphen getting his pin over Jacob Joanette at 1:05 and Nasoni needing a scant 14 seconds to pin Dylan Bice.
Elsewhere, B’ville rolled through its opposition, defeating Ogdensburg Free Academy 45-31, smashing Beaver River 75-6, stopping Carthage 48-35 and handling Watertown IHC 66-18.
Paul was given Most Outstanding Wrestler honors for his 5-0 mark during the day. His pin over OFA’s Adam Rickett in 57 seconds keyed a comeback from an early deficit as B’ville won five of the last six matches, including pins by McArdell, Ross and Jeremy Pond (126 pounds).
B’ville also trailed against Carthage with six matches to go, but starting with Paul’s 22-second pin over Chris Garcia, the Bees won four in a row as Ross, Petrelli and McArdell all got pins, too, before the first period was done.
Yet another big meet awaits B’ville this Saturday at the Phoenix Round Robin, where the host Firebirds, along with Fayetteville-Manlius, Liverpool and Central Square, will take part. The Bees will first visit F-M on Wednesday night.
