CENTRAL NEW YORK – The return of Section III championships for fall sports started with boys golf and the two sectional tournaments that took place early this week.
In next Wednesday’s large-school sectional tournament at Radisson Greens, Jamesville-DeWitt would look to continue its vast regular-season success, with Fayetteville-Manlius and East Syracuse Minoa also on hand.
J-D earned its eighth straight win Monday at Drumlins putting away Syracuse City 181-244, with Jackson Saroney setting a new season mark as he shot a 31 for nine holes.
Not far behind, Punn Chittaratlert earned a 33, with Trey Jacobson getting a 37. Ian Delpha and Blaise Anthis both had scores of 40.
Then J-D faced a big test a day later, going to Walden Oaks to face Cortland, but for the second time in as many weeks the Rams put away the Purple Tigers, this time in a 192-207 decision.
It was Chittaratlert going to the forefront, his 35 two better than Saroney’s 37. Jacobson added a 39 as Mitchell Archer, shooting 40, matched Cortland’s top player, Andrew Partigianoni. Anthis clinched the victory with a 41.
When J-D and ESM collided again on Wednesday at the Links at Erie Village, it was the Rams prevailing 179-227 over ESM Blue and topping ESM Orange by a larger margin to go to 11-0 with its three top golfers all breaking par.
Saroney shot 33, a number Chittaratlert matched, while Delpha put up a season-best 35. Jacobson had a 39 and Archer added a 40.
Unable to keep up with that pace, ESM Blue did get a 38 from Zach Johnnson, who beat out 43s posted by Braedon Smith and Aaron Reynolds. No other Spartans golfer broke 50.
Making it five wins in four days, J-D beat Fulton 185-212 on Thursday to complete its perfect 12-0 run through the league as Saroney put up a 29, the lowest round by any Section III player this fall.
That accounted for most of the winning margin since Chittaratlert was second for the Rams shooting a 38. Delpha and Matt Radford both posted 39 and Anthis added a 40.
