TOWN OF DEWITT – Several communities in the eastern suburbs plan memorial ceremonies for the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11.
The town of DeWitt’s ceremony will take place on Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. Because of the pandemic, the ceremony will be live streamed on Facebook and only participants and officials will be on site for the event. A recording of the event will be available afterwards.
The event will take place at the town’s 9/11 Memorial, which prominently features a battered and twisted steel column from the World Trade Center. Two months after the Sept. 11 attacks a group of DeWitt residents sought out a piece of debris from the World Trade Center to create a permanent memorial to the victims of the attack.
The column they obtained is 21 feet high, weighs approximately six tons and lists about four degrees to the side from damage sustained Sept. 11.
In the village of Minoa, a memorial march will take place beginning at 8:30 a.m. The march will feature local officials and first responders from the area as well as the Syracuse Scottish Pipe Band.
The route of the march, which is open to the public, is from Lewis Park to the Minoa Municipal Building.
The village of Manlius’ ceremony will commence at 10 a.m. at the new Memorial Park, located at the Manlius Fire Station at the intersection of Route 92 and Enders Road. The park features a steel beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center, which collapsed at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001, and a brief service will be held at that time.
