Hats off to junior high for its fundraising

Durgee Junior High School’s Honor Society embarked on its first community service project this fall when it adopted the Martin Millennium Academy in North Carolina to help with the school’s recovery after Hurricane Matthew. The school is in need of donations of basic school supplies because of damaging floodwaters.

On Halloween the Durgee Honor Society sponsored a Hat Day. Anyone donating at least a dollar to the Academy was allowed to wear a hat (usually against the district’s Code of Conduct) in school that day. With the support of students and staff, the Durgee Honor Society raised over $300 with this activity.

For two weeks in November, the Honor Society is collecting donations of school supplies in each classroom. Students and staff are donating paper, pencils, pens, notebooks and other essential school items for the North Carolina students. Durgee plans to ship the supplies to the Academy right before Thanksgiving.
