Canton Woods Summer Entertainment Series brings music and dynamic guest speakers to our senior center. The series is supported by sponsors and grows each year. February is American Heart Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, but heart disease is preventable and controllable. The CDC recommends you eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, monitor your blood pressure, don’t smoke, limit alcohol use, have your cholesterol checked, manage your diabetes and take your medicine. Take a moment to think about your heart health and consider making some lifestyle changes. Canton Woods offers many opportunities to increase your activity and improve your heart health.
Tai Chi is held at 8 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday morning at Canton Woods. There is a small fee for this class; speak to the instructor.
Active Older Americans Aerobics taught by a Y instructor. The class is held at 9:15 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. There is a fee payable to the instructor.
Falls Prevention Class at Canton Woods. This is a free class taught by a licensed physical therapist. The class is held at 10 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.
Arm Chair Aerobics takes place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. This is led by a volunteer.
Winter weather can sometimes mean closings:
- Canton Woods Senior Center is closed only when the village of Baldwinsville is closed.
- The PEACE senior lunch program is cancelled when the Syracuse City Schools are closed.
Join the Sharing Memories Writing Program at Canton Woods! The Sharing Memories Writing Program is held at 1 p.m. every Wednesday. This is a dynamic group who come to together to share their memories and put them down on paper. Experience this engaging process under the guidance of Tina Trainham.
Art Group will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20. This group is facilitated by retired B’ville art teacher Mike Conway. The group will accept beginner and intermediate “students” and will focus on drawing and painting. Please bring your sketchbook and art supplies.
Canton Woods Book Club will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20. They will be discussing “Winter Garden,” by Kristen Hannah.
Myrna Koldin, Aging Services Specialist from the Onondaga County Office for Aging, will be here at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16. Topic: New Medicare Cards and Information on Changing your Medicare Health Plan.
Pharmacist Danielle from Walgreens will visit the center at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23. Topic: Possible Issues with Over-the-Counter Medications and Your Own Prescriptions.
AARP Defensive Driving. The next class is scheduled for Thursday, April 5. The class is 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Classes fill up quickly. Call Canton Woods for future dates, and to sign up (315) 638-4536.
Senior Nutrition. You can enjoy lunch at the center. Canton Woods is a senior nutrition lunch site on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Make a reservation at (315) 638-4536 and stop by at noon for lunch. The nutrition program is open to anyone 60 years of age and older. Suggested donation is $3.
Wondering what’s for lunch? On Wednesday, Feb. 14, the menu includes golden battered cod filet, red-skinned potato wedges, four-way mixed vegetables and chocolate ice cream. Make a reservation and join us for lunch!
