Ernest Linwood Sellen, Sr., 86, of Delphi Falls, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at home with his family by his side. He was born March 25, 1933, in Syracuse to John Selenski and Eleanor Leinbough. Ernie enlisted in the U.S. Army in March of 1953 and was stationed in the motor pool unit until his honorable discharge in December 1954. He was employed by Crouse-Hinds in Syracuse for 45 years of service, 35 years of which he was a supervisor and plant manager. Ernie’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. He spent many days camping, fishing and working in his garden along with playing his harmonica, piano and concertina.
In his younger years, he taught his children how to care for animals and enjoy their company. Together they raised chickens, rabbits, dogs and even a pony. Ernie was skilled when using tools and was handy at building things that were needed. He will be remembered as one who put others needs above his own and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, whom he married on July 13, 1954, Joanne Elizabeth Dahl Sellen; his children, Sue Newkirk, Connie (Bob) Combs, Ernie (Sue) Sellen, Jr., Wendy (Art) Morris and Gwen Sellen; his sister, Betsy Walker; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Ernie was predeceased by his siblings John, June, Lynn, Mickie and Bonnie.
There are no calling hours, his family will be having a private service. Donations can be made to the Delphi Falls Fire Department, who were always right there when we needed them. To leave a message of sympathy for the Sellen family, please visit michaelebrownfuneralservices.com.
