Margery Jane (McLean) Schultz was born May 10, 1937, in Cortland, N.Y., the middle child of Donald Vincent and Dorothy Cecilia (Freson) McLean. They later moved to Olean and then Syracuse, where she graduated from St. Anthony of Padua High School and was known by her family as Margie and her friends as “Little Moot.” She was then trained as an x-ray technician at the Clifton Springs Technical College.
She married Ronald J. Schultz of Syracuse in 1958, and had five children, Kristen, David, Kurt and Thomas, and one child who died shortly after birth.
She spent most of her life in Skaneateles, where she was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish, and volunteered at the Museum at the Creamery of the Skaneateles Historical Society and Meals on Wheels. She also loved to travel, with one of her most memorable trips abroad being Ireland with the Skaneateles ladies “Irish Group,” and her son Tom and his wife Jennifer.
Margie also worked as an x-ray technician at Community General Hospital for over 18 years.
She was perhaps best known for her love of gourmet cooking and entertaining, often preparing special menus based on books she’d read, places she travelled, or people she’d met. She was also a voracious reader and loved to tell funny stories and laugh. She loved knitting for her grandchildren, pulling weeds, cleaning and enjoyed a large circle of close friends she met and nurtured every place she lived. Even friends she knew only a short while felt close to her and kept in touch over the years.
She moved to Wilmington, N.C., 15 years ago, where she lived in Porter’s Neck and enjoyed book club, and raising her grandchildren, Alex and Annabel.
She was predeceased by her parents, and brother Andy McLean. She is survived by her children, Kristen Schultz of Los Angeles; David and Laura (Rosenthall) Schultz and their children Alex and Annabel of Wilmington, NC; Kurt and Elizabeth (Tucker) Schultz of Fayetteville, NY and their children Sydney, Hayley and Spencer; and Thomas and Jennifer (King) Schultz of Syracuse and their children Sophie and Kate, as well as her sister Ann Ryan, of Ballston Spa, N.Y.
A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to Meals on Wheels.
