Ann Oliver Kugler, 94, passed away at Vermont Respite House on July 19, 2016. She was the middle daughter of Clara and Charles Oliver, born in Scotia, N.Y., on a snowy Easter Sunday, April 16, 1922.
She grew up in Schenectady, N.Y. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1944 with a B.S in Education and completed her M.Ed. from NYU in 1950. While teaching, she became involved with the OYK’s, a YMCA/YWCA outdoor social club, where she met her husband, George Charles Kugler.
They married on Feb. 10, 1950, and honeymooned at Mt. Tremblant, Canada, skiing. They built their first house in Marcellus, where Rolf and Gwen were born. After moving to Skaneateles, Gretchen was born and they enjoyed living on the west side of the lake for the next 18 years.
When George began working for Ithaca College, they moved to Ithaca and happily settled into the community for the next 16 years. Ann returned to college for certification for special education, which she taught until retirement. Soon after moving to Ithaca they built the AKANU cottage on Cayuga Lake, 80 steps up a cliff from waters’ edge. Many days were spent enjoying water sports. George passed away in 1996. In 1999, Ann moved to Shelburne, VT to be closer to daughter, Gwen and her family, where she resided for the remainder of her life.
She is survived by two children: Gwen Kugler Stetson (John) of Shelburne, VT, and Gretchen Kugler Chenenko (Steve) of Worthington, OH. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Amy Stetson of Bozeman, MT, and Nate Chenenko (Brittany) and great-grandson, Brenner, of Rochester. She was predeceased by her son, Rolf Kugler and grandson, Tyler Stetson. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Sept. 17 at the Shelburne United Methodist Church.
