The Cazenovia village election was held without much fanfare this week as two candidates vied uncontested for two seats on the village Board of Trustees. Incumbent Trustee David Porter and political newcomer Maureen Fellows, both Democrats, were elected to the board on Tuesday, June 21. In an election of 132 total votes, Fellows received 65 votes, Porter received 58 votes, there was one write-in vote and eight blank votes.
Porter and Fellows will be sworn-in to office at the July 5 regular monthly meeting of the village board. Both trustee terms expire in 2018.
Porter, who has served as a village trustee since 2010, is a 28-year resident of Cazenovia, a licensed professional engineer, a Certified Energy Manager and a LEED Accredited Professional for building design and construction. He was an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1977-1981, worked for 20 years at Stearns & Wheler in Cazenovia and is currently employed at Bergmann Associates in Syracuse as senior mechanical and energy engineer.
In addition to his work on the village board, Porter is active in the Lions Club and Cazenovia Youth Soccer and has served on the board of trustees of the Cazenovia Public Library. He lives on Sullivan Street with his wife, Betsy Moore, and son Kevin.
During his tenure on the village board, Porter has contributed to projects such as the Clark Street Bridge, the restoration of Carpenter’s Barn, ongoing storm water management issues and work to reduce the electrical consumption of village buildings.
Fellows, who was nominated by the Democrats to run for the seat held by Trustee Jim Joseph, who did not seek re-election, has worked for 30 years at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, currently as vice president for government and external relations. She serves on Governor Cuomo’s Wood Products Development Council and represents the college on local, regional and statewide economic development committees.
Fellows has been involved in the Cazenovia community through her leadership on the Board of Cazenovia Children’s House, Common Grounds and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where she served on the Vestry. She and her husband Jonathan have lived on Lincklaen Street for the past 24 years; their children, Sam, Sarah and Will, all graduated from Cazenovia schools.
