After more than one year of discussion and study, the Fenner Town Board last week approved the purchase of 15 new welcome signs to be posted on multiple entrance roads to the town at a cost not to exceed $3,000.
The new signs will be 36-by-36 inches, green with white lettering, and will say “Welcome to the Town of Fenner, Established 1823.” The signs will be made by J.C. Smith Inc., of Syracuse, at a cost of $137 per sign, said Deputy Town Supervisor Hannah Strack, who presided over the board’s July 9 regular monthly meeting in the absence of Supervisor Dave Jones who was away on vacation. Strack said none of the local businesses who bid on the sign project could beat J.C. Smith’s prices.
The new town welcome signs will be placed as follows: two on Oxbow Road, two on Route 13, two on Nelson Road, and one each on Cody, Fenner, Mile Strip, Peterboro, Swamp School, Perryville, Falls, Michigan and Francis roads.
Also at the meeting, Town Clerk Paula Douglas said the town is currently coordinating with the Madison County parks commission, planning board and historian to hold a possible community picnic at Nichols Pond park as part of the 400th anniversary celebration of the Oneida-Champlain battle, said to have occurred there in 1615. Douglas said the county currently is looking to hold the celebration sometime in October.
Finally, Councilor William Wester reminded residents that the annual Fenner versus Nelson softball game will again be held during the town of Nelson’s Skunk Hollow Days, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Aug. 1, and the town of Fenner is looking for players. Players must be age 13 or older, as well as Fenner town residents. For more information, contact the town clerk at 655-2705.
