LIVERPOOL — Nine days after a burglary at the Sugar Blossom Cake Shop at 304 Tulip St., the Liverpool Police Department was busy investigating two more break-ins in the same neighborhood.
On the morning of Sunday, Jan. 23, patrol officers were called to Freedom of Espresso at 403 First St. to answer a burglary alarm at approximately 4 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found an open window at the scene.
After rendering the business safe, it was determined that there was no property loss nor damage to the coffeehouse.
While investigating the open window at Freedom of Espresso, officers were alerted by Cobblestone Ale House employees that the tavern had sustained a broken window. The Cobblestone is located immediately across the street from Freedom of Espresso at 400 First St.
On Sunday afternoon, a surveillance video showing a hooded intruder was posted on the Cobblestone’s Facebook page.
“A review of the security cameras determined two males peering inside a window prior to breaking the window,” said LPD Det. Robert Marshall, who’s heading the investigations into the three business-district burglaries. “One suspect entered the business through the broken window. During the investigation, it was determined that no monetary loss had occurred.”
At the Jan. 26 village board meeting, Mayor Gary White — a former deputy chief at the Syracuse Police Department — reported that the burglaries were under investigation.
“We need to stay vigilant,” White said.
Village Judge Anthony LaValle, who lives on lower Tulip Street and who attended last week’s village trustees meeting, indicated that there was plenty of neighborhood surveillance video that could provide relevant evidence.
LPD Police Chief Jerry Unger reached out to residents. “Anyone who lives in the vicinity of Tulip Street and First Street should review their home security cameras and report any findings to the Liverpool Police Department,” he advised.
The Jan. 23 burglaries came on the heels of the cake shop burglary.
On Jan. 14, at approximately 4 a.m., Liverpool police were called to Sugar Blossom Cake Shop regarding a broken window. It was reported that as bakery employees began to arrive for work, they found the side window in the alley had been smashed and the cash drawer was removed from an interior wall.
With assistance from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, a search of the bakery revealed that a brick had been tossed through the side window. After interviewing the employees, it was determined that a small amount of money had been inside the cash register.
