JORDAN– At a small gathering at the Jordan-Elbridge town community center, John Spencer was recognized as Senior Citizen of the Year and was presented with this honor by Onondaga County Legislator Ken Bush Jr.
May marked what is recognized as Older Americans Month with a theme of communities of strength.
Onondaga County Office of the Aging also recognized Spencer for this honor.
According to a press release, Spencer has exemplified the theme of communities of strength through his work in the community.
Since 2010, Spencer has been giving his time driving for the Jordan-Elbridge Transportation Program, ensuring seniors are able to get to and from essential services, like doctor’s appointments.
According to the announcement, Spencer makes sure he is always available if known for making passengers comfortable and bringing a sense of humor with his while driving to and from appointments.
Spencer also volunteered as flight leader for the Eagle Flight Program our of Marcellus Airport.
This program, and Spencer’s time, gave young people the opportunity to get experience flying they would not otherwise have had.
Spencer also served as a Science Olympiad Coach for inner city students at the Syracuse Academy of Science, and he has hosted students as part of the Finger Lakes Live Steamers, a railroad club based in Waterloo.
Originally from Orchard Park, Spencer moved to the Syracuse area in 1967 and resides in Elbridge with his wife, Linda, and their rescue dogs.
