The Manlius Historical Society has added a new aspect to its community offerings: A new shop that will showcase local artisans and products and enable visitors to take home a piece of Manlius.
The Manlius Town Shop, located at the Cheney Research Center at 109 Pleasant St. in the village of Manlius, will showcase local artwork, products and crafts while also offering background information on each item and its producer.
Jane Dall, a long-time member of the MHS, said she got the idea to create the store because she saw many people who came to the Cheney Research Center were looking for a piece of Manlius to take home, and it was a way to help the historical society take in some money. She teamed up with local handmade jewelry artisan and MHS member Malaine DeFrancisco and together they opened the shop in the former kitchen area of the building.
“I’ve never owned a store before so this was a learning experience,” said Dall. “I just think it’s a great way to show visitors what we have to offer here in Manlius and our rich culture.”
Products and producers offered at the shop include Designs by Laine, Lune Chocolat, Wild Orchid, Stickley, Hollowick, Go Girl Headbands, Paradise Farms and Our Farm. One of the historical items that can be purchased is a replica of the fireplex markers that were used in the early days of the town to signify which houses had paid the fire tax in the event of a fire emergency.
“It’s a great way to help keep the historical society running and to showcase the many local artisans we have. There’s a lot of pride in what this town offers,” said DeFrancisco who owns Designs by Laine. “It helps support the artisans and the historical society all at the same time, what can be better than that?”
“It helps to create and build community,” added Dall.
The Manlius Town Shop is open during the hours of the Cheney Research Center, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday to Friday and also by appointment by calling 682-6660.
