Still with an undefeated mark to protect, the top girls swimmers from Jamesville-DeWitt went to last Friday’s Onondaga High School League championship meet and would gain a fair share of victories, while Christian Brothers Academy also found some success.
Alden Coyne nearly swept the sprints for the Red Rams. In the 50-yard freestyle, Coyne, in 25.50 seconds, edged Oswego’s Mariah Metcalf (25.56 seconds) for the title, with Emma Galletta third in 26.44 seconds. Meg Parker and Katie Salvo each finished in 26.68 seconds, tying for fifth. Galletta would later finish fifth in the 100 butterfly.
Moving to the 100 freestyle, Coyne posted 56.35 seconds, but this time Metcalf (55.81 seconds) beat her, with Salvo (57.85 seconds) and Samantha Coombs (58.98 seconds) third and fourth, respectively.
J-D won three others titles, starting with Amelia Hesler going 2:00.88 to hold off Mexico’s Katie Lamb (2:01.14) in the 200 freestyle, with Hesler later finishing second (5:28.21) to Lamb (5;26.09) in the 500 freestyle as Meredith Wagner gained fifth place in 5:50.64.
Meg Parker would win the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.52, just ahead of Oswego’s Elaina Rando (1:14.79) as Riley Cappelletti took fourth place in 1:19.99. Right after that race, in the 400 freestyle relay, Wagner, Hesler, Sawyer Parker and Sophia Farchione pulled away to win in 4:03.22, with Skaneateles (4:05.65) in the runner-up spot.
In each of the other two relays, J-D got close, but didn’t win. Farchione, Coyne, Meg Parker and Marissa Potamianos went 1:56.18 in the 200 medley relay, just behind Oswego’s 1:55.44, and it was the same in the 200 freestyle relay as Hesler, Salvo, Coombs and Coyne posted 1:43.94, but the Buccaneers again prevailed, in 1:43.56.
CBA’s lone title came in the 200 individual medley, where Julia Torell, in a time of 2:22.22, edged Farchione (2:22.70) as Wagner and Potamianos were fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the 100 butterfly, Torell finished second in 1:04.29 to Oswego’s Caitlin Gorton (58.29 seconds), who also won the 100 backstroke (1:00.55) over CBA star Annie Fletcher, who was second in 1:03.08 after taking third in the 500 freestyle in 5:34.71. Farchione got third place in the 100 backstroke (1:03.76) for J-D’s side.
Elsewhere for the Brothers, Tessa Queri was fifth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle, with Katie Toole sixth in the 500 freestyle. Darien Tompkins took fifth in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the 200 IM behind Torrell. Katelyn Wendt and Lauren Kelly were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke, with CBA’s best relay finish coming in the 200 medley as Torell, Fletcher, Queri and Wendt took third place in 2:02.26, the Brothers fourth in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
All of this followed last Wednesday’s visit to J-D from Fayetteville-Manlius. A packed house at J-D Middle School was on hand for the battle as J-D withstood the Hornets’ challenge and won a 96-87 decision.
Under the guidance of head coach Tim Gallivan, F-M has made giant strides, getting off to a 4-2 start this season. But J-D held them off by, among other things, sweeping all three relay events, with Amelia Hesler swimming a leg in all three of them.
Hesler, Galletta, Sawyer Parker and Jordan Archer swam the 200 medley relay in 2:08.80. Coyne, Coombs and Potamianos joined Hesler to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.32, with Parker, Hesler, Isabella Rubino and Aleksandra Patalita swimming the 400 freestyle relay in 4:17.25 to edge F-M’s Saya Hrosar, Sophie Fowler, Annie Christopher and Abbey Harris, who finished in 4:17.80.
Coyne again claimed a pair of individual titles, going 2:04.06 to beat Potamianos (2:08.68) and F-M’s Hannah Kellogg (2:14.47) in the 200 freestyle. Then, in the 100 butterfly, Coyne went 1:05.07 and Meg Parker was second in 1:09.06.
Farchione returned to one of her specialties and prevailed in the 200 individual medley in 2:25.70, with F-M’s Sophie Fowler second in 2:28.05. Parker, in 27.02 seconds, beat Wagner (27.43) and Harris (27.85) in the 50 freestyle. Galletta won the 100 freestyle over Katie Salvo, 58.61 seconds to 58.79.
F-M did prevail in the diving competition, with Riley Miller earning 219.70 points to edge J-D’s Megan Alkins (219.05 points), with Alkins’ teammate, Anna Skandalis (206.60 points), in third place. The Hornets also swept the top spots in the 500 freestyle as Michelle Sipper, in 6:13.21, held off Caroline Muller (6:16.91) and Gillian Hall (6:35.27) to finish in front.
Later, in the 100 backstroke, Christina Burnam, in 1:11.22, edged Hrosar (1:11.83) for that top spot, while the Hornets’ Sophie Jones blazed to a win in the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.51 as Grace Bang was second in 1:20.20.
Right after the OHSL meet, top divers gathered at Nottingham for Saturday’s Syracuse Diving Invitational. CBA’s Sam Lanzafame did best, finishing second with 415.4 points, only behind Liverpool’s Alyssa Vadala, who won with 449.5 points.
Lanzafame’s teammate, Erin Wind, had 391.5 points to finish fifth, while Miller gave F-M a sixth-place finish with 371.2 points, beating out the Brothers’ Cassandra Finkbeiner (369.55 points) and J-D’s Hannah Gunther (354.7 points). Two other J-D divers, Anna Skandalis (327.5 points) and Megan Alkins (321 points), were 11thand 13th, respectively, while F-M’s Francesca Femia (305.3 points) was 16th.
