Activity picked up for the area’s girls swim teams, but each of them met the tasks with a string of meet victories.
Jamesville-DeWitt met the combined Syracuse city squad last Tuesday night and won each of the races on the schedule, prevailing by a 97-79 margin as two swimmers, Meredith Wagner and Amelia Hesler, won two individual races apiece.
Wagner swam the 200-yard freestyle in two minutes, 12.76 seconds, winning that event, and then took the longer 500 freestyle in 5:46.93. As for Hesler, she followed up a 50 freestyle triump in 26.34 seconds by beating the field in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.42.
Sophia Farchione went 1:00.70 to win the 100 freestyle, with Meg Parker taking first place in the 100 backstroke in 1:14.58. Jordan Archer was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.39) as Emma Galletta won the 200 individual medley in 2:38.25 and Megan Alkins recorded 217.9 points in diving.
Archer, Hesler, Galletta and Samantha Parker swam the 200 medley relay in 2:09.27. Galletta and Hesler returned in the 200 freestyle relay, joining Alexsandra Patalita and Celia Hatem for a victory in 1:56.50 as Alden Coyne, who rested most of the night, teamed with Alexis Phillips, Taylor Roadarmel and Rachel Setek to swim the 400 freestyle relay in 4:26.32.
J-D made it 6-0 on Friday night, venturing to Oswego and bashing the Buccaneers 99-82 to clinch at least a share of the Onondaga High School League regular-season title.
Hesler had a big night, starting in the 200 freestyle, where she beat Alexis Phillips, 2:03.72 to 2:04.63, before proceeding to the 500 freestyle and gaining another victory in 5:30.81, this time with Wagner (5:45.90) in the runner-up spot.
In the 200 IM, Wagner again was second, in 2:27.15, just behind Meg Parker’s winning 2:25.99, with Farchione, who was second in the 100 butterfly, prevailing in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.64.
Alden Coyne lost her sprint duels with Oswego star Mariah Metcalf, who edged Coyne, 25.57 seconds to 25.67, in the 50 freestyle, and did the same in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 55.83 seconds to Coyne’s 56.35.
On the other hand, Coyne, Parker, Farchione and Marissa Potamianos helped J-D hold off Oswego, 1:57.11 to 1:57.86, in a fast 200 medley relay, with Hesler joining Phillips, Potamianos and Galletta in the 200 freestyle relay victory in 1:45.46 and Galletta, Wagner, Hesler and Katie Salvo going 3:56.69 in the 400 freestyle relay.
As for Christian Brothers Academy, it began its week by going to Mexico last Tuesday and topping the Tigers by a score of 98-78.
The key to that victory was a sweep of the three relays. The Brothers saw Annie Fletcher, Julia Torell, Tessa Queri and KatelynWendt power to victory in the 200 medley in 2:05.01, while Beth Lumia joined Torell, Fletcher and Queri in the 200 freestyle relay that finished in 1:51.48.
Finally, Fletcher, Torell and Queri, now joined by Molly Oyer, claimed the 400 freestyle relay, all of which obscured Mexico’s many victories in individual events, including Julia Lamb giving the Tigers first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:08.26) and 100 freestyle (58.87 seconds).
Torell did go 2:28.96 to pull away in the 200 IM and Fletcher won the 500 freestyle (5:34.97) as Queri (26.44 seconds), Katie Toole (28.86 seconds) and Lauren Kelly (29.19 seconds) went 1-2-3 in the 50 freestyle.
Now CBA went to Liverpool Thursday night. With the Warriors suffering a rare down year, the Brothers pounced.
Fayetteville-Manlius lost, 97-89, to Oswego in last Tuesday’s meet, despite Abbey Harris (2:12.82) and Saya Hrosar (2;15.48) going 1-2 in the 200 freestyle and Riley Miller, with 194.8 points, joining Francesca Femia (175.35 points) for a 1-2 sweep.
Hrosar had her own victory in the 500 freestyle in 5:59.14, while Sophie Fowler was second in the 200 IM (2:28.04) and 100 breaststroke (1:15.78) by close margins. Christina Burnam was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:10 flat after Cara Campbell went 27.65 seconds in the 50 freestyle and Abbey Harris went 59.92 seconds in the 100 freestyle, each of them second-place finishes, too. Hrosar, Fowler, Harris and Anna Christopher won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:06.66.
Three days later, the Hornets held off the combined Syracuse city squad 93-89, improving to 4-2 on the season – but knowing that a meet against J-D loomed on Wednesday before hosting West Genesee on Friday night at Cazenovia College’s pool.
