Some faces, like Ashely Kent, are familiar. Others, like Clara Rowles and Kirsten Underwood, are newer to the scene.
But the results are the same – the Cazenovia girls track and field team as an OHSL Liberty National division regular-season champion, a fifth title in six years earned Tuesday afternoon when the Lakers went to Westhill-Bishop Ludden and handled the Warriors 86-55.
Rowles began her big day by pairing with Maria Stalder, Maddie Langey and Meggie Hart to take the 4×800 relay in nine minutes, 58 seconds to Westhill-Ludden’s 10:15.60, this before Hart pulled away to win the 3,000-meter run in 10:52.7.
Then, in the 1,500-meter run, Rowles posted 4:53.3 to pull away from the Warriors’ Genny Corcoran (5:04.9), with the 800-meter run turning out the same as Rowles prevailed in 2:28.6 and Corcoran (2:30.9) was close behind.
Underwood swept two of the sprints, going 13.4 seconds to hold off Westhill-Ludden’s Isabella Haber (13.7 seconds) in the 100-meter dash and also taking the 200-meter dash in 28.1 seconds. In the 4×100 relay, Underwood, Kent, Delaney Yates and Jessica Macheda held off the Warriors, 53.9 seconds to 54.1, for yet another victory.
Kent won twice, and nearly got three of them. In the 100-meter hurdles, Kent, in 17.7 seconds, pulled away from Westhill-Ludden’s Kathryn Doherty (17.7 seconds), who had won the pole vault.
In the triple jump, Kent’s top leap of 33 feet 8 inches nearly topped Annibel Coolican (32’8 ½”) by a a foot, and in the long jump, Kent went 14’10”, one inch behind the Warriors’ Zoe Fortin, who won with a leap of 14’11”.
Tori Fischer, clearing 5 feet, and Jamie Joseph (4’8”) went 1-2 in the high jump, but Joseph, who was also second in the 400-meter hurdles, won the shot put with a heave of 29’9 ½” to edge Westhill-Ludden’s Mary Kate Washburn by half an inch. Grace Wheeler (72’6”) and Holly Eberle (71’8”) swept the top two spots in the discus.
In the boys meet between Cazenovia and Westhill-Ludden, the Lakers got close to making it a sweep, but fell to the Warriors by a 76-66 margin.
And this happened despite a slew of Cazenovia wins in individual events, including Sawyer Hunt sweeping the shot put (43 feet) and discus, where his throw of 106’2” edged teammate Nate Spangler, who threw it 105’10”.
Sean Satchwell also won twice, claiming the 800 in 2:03 flat and, in the mile, going 4:43 flat to beat Westhill-Ludden’s Garnet Remillard (4:45.1). Alex Devine won the 200 in 24.4 seconds and paired with Satchwell, Alec Boone and Ryan O’Herien to edge the Warriors, 3:43.0 to 3:43.1, in a tense 4×400 relay. Dominick King was victorious in the 400 hurdles in 1:04.6.
While O’Herien (11.6 seconds) and Tom McNerney (12.0 seconds) went 1-2 in the 100, Walker Nichols took the 110 high hurdles in 15.4 seconds and added a long jump victory by going 19’10”. Devine was second in the triple jump (38’7 ½”) and Nichols was second (5’10”) in the high jump, each time with Westhill-Ludden’s Jordan Roland taking the top spot.

Hart provided the big moment when she won the 2,000-meter steeplechase, pulling away from the field and, in 7:56.21, ending up as the only runner under the eight-minute mark as B’ville’s Elizabeth Fawwaz (8:10.47) took the runner-up spot.
Also, Hart helped Stalder, Bailey Forrett and Kaitlin Rossiter go 10:31.72 in the 4×800 to get second place behind Skaneateles, who prevailed in 10:13.36. Mya Walters was fifth (12:41.10 in the 3,000.
