Attempting to follow up its Feb. 5 Section III Class B triumph, the Skaneateles boys indoor track and field team almost pulled it off during Wednesday night’s Onondaga High School League championship meet at SRC Arena.
Competing in Division II, Skaneateles again found itself in a close battle with Cazenovia. This time, though, those other Lakers finished on top, getting 112 points as Skaneateles, with 106 points, settled for second place.
Still, Skaneateles won two of three relays. It started in the 4×400, where James Hackler, Cooper Watt, Nick Palmer and Connor Hill finished in three minutes, 46.27 seconds, beating out Tully (3:48.12) for that top spot.
In the 4×200, Hill and Palmer, joined by Griffin Lawson and Noah Cliff, pulled away in 1:38.65 as Hannibal 1:41.35) finished second. What kept Skaneateles from a relay sweep was the 4×800, where Hackler, Watt, Steve Ciaccio and Kai Soderberg was second (9:01.44) to Jordan-Elbridge (9:00.55).
Just before that, in the 300-meter dash, Skaneateles went 1-2 as Hill posted a time of 37.13 seconds and Lawson, in 37.70 seconds, followed in second place.
Hagen won a close 55-meter dash, finishing in 7.00 seconds and holding off Cazenovia’s Alex Devine (7.08 seconds) at the line as Palmer, in 7.25 seconds, gained fourth place. In the 55-meter hurdles, Hagen, in 8.83 seconds, was second to Cazenovia’s Walker Nichols (8.01 seconds).
Moving to field events, Zach Schneider won the shot put, his top throw of 43 feet 6 ¼ inches nearly two feet better than J-E’s Brad Marshall (41’8 ½”). Eli Goodell cleared 5’8” in the high jump, second to Nichols (6 feet), as Lawson topped 5’6” for third place.
Watt, in a time of 1:29.94, gained third place in the 600-meter run, while Hagen had a third-place long jump of 19’2 ¾”. Ciaccio was eighth in the 1,000-meter run in 3:17.43, while Dan Haro was sixth in the mile.
When the Skaneateles girls took its turn on Thursday night, it picked up 118 points, winning relays and distance races, but still finishing second as, once again, Cazenovia went to the top spot, using its strength in field events to gather up 141 points and prevail.
Liz Dwyer won the 3,000-meter run, going 11:08.12 to pull away from Cazenovia’s Meggie Hart (11:18.71) for that top spot, right before the 4×400 relay where Julia Willcox, Maddie Peterson, Olivia Gage and Shannan Roberts went 4:18.43, pulling away from Cazenovia (4:32.17) this time around.
Skaneateles, in fact, won two of three relays. Peterson, Gage, Amanda Wetmore and Mia Grasso claimed the 4×200 in 1:50.52, with Cazenovia (1:52.90) in second place again. Only in the 4×800 did the Lakers get topped, as Dwyer, Wilcox, Natalie Condon and Finan Malcolm finished second in 10:48.86 behind Jordan-Elbridge, who won in 10:38.82.
Wetmore, in 7.71 seconds, finished second, and Laurel Parker was third in 7.76 seconds, behind CBA’s Anna Schug (7.47 seconds) in the 55 sprint.
Mikaela Terhune, in 9.75 seconds, made it to third place in the 55 hurdles. Roberts was third in the 300 in 44.46 seconds and Cecilia Marrinan (45.02 seconds) was fifth.
Willcox got to fourth place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:11.44. Malcolm was fourth in the 1,000 in 3:30.84. Condon took eighth in the 600-meter run in 1:56.39.
Cazenovia won four of five field events to make up for what Skaneateles did on the oval. Still, Angela Krause contended in the triple jump, going 32’1” to finish second to Cazenovia’s Ashley Kent (32’6 ¼”) as Lauren Goodchild was third, going 29’8 ¾”. Krause also took third in the long jump with a top leap of 14’8 ½”.
Keely Gregg, in the pole vault, topped 7’6”, second to Cazenovia’s Katie Robbins, who won with an 8-foot attempt. Grasso cleared 4’8” in the high jump, finishing second to Faith Heritage’s Charlotte Matzal (4’10”), as Aubreah Lynn (4’6”) finished fourth. Nieve Morse was fourth in the shot put, throwing it 20’7 ½”.
