Spread out over three different divisions, area indoor track and field teams would find a fair amount of success in Thursday night’s league championships meets at SRC Arena – and one would nearly win.
That was Westhill-Bishop Ludden, who posted 97 points on Onondaga High School League Division and finished second to Jamesville-DeWitt, who won with 137 points.
Solvay and Marcellus, each with 33 points, tied for fourth in OHSL Division I, while Jordan-Elbridge was fourth in OHSL Division II with 34 points and West Genesee was fourth in the CNY Counties League National division with 73 points.
Alaina Kenny won the 3,000-meter run in 11:05.59, while teammate Maura McAnaney was third in 11:58.94. Marcellus’ Lillianna Cushman was fifth in 12:33.06. Kenny, McAnaney, Kendra MacCaull and Noelle Coolican were second (10:41.38) to J-D (10:38.85) in the 4×800 relay.
Moving to field events, Westhill-Ludden’s Katherine Doherty won the pole vault, clearing 9 feet 6 inches, beating a field that included Coolican (8’6”) in third place.
Westhill-Ludden was victorious in the 4×400 relay as MacCaull, Oilvia Daigneau, Ciara Hoyne and Katie De Verya posted 4:36.53, with J-D second in 4:39.60. In the 4×200, De Verya, Daigneau, McAnaney and Doherty were third in 1:58.05, with Solvay (2:00.75) in sixth place.
Marcellus saw Brianna Szczech, Haley Randall, Rickie Mixon and Crystal Silliman finish fourth in 4:54.90, with Szczech, Mixon, Randall and Jamie McClennan fourth (11:46.22) in the 4×800.
Annibel Coolican got to second place in the 600-meter run in 1:44.62 behind Mexico’s Hutner Gowans (1:41.82) as Marcellus’ Tori Stopen finished third in 1:47.15. Also, Coolican was third in the 1,000-meter run in 3:13.53, with Hoyne seventh, and sixth in the high jump.
Genny Corcoran went 5:13.86 in the 1,500-meter run, second to J-D’s Hannah Butler (5:02.83), while Carmella Carr was fourth in 5:28.12 and Marcellus Emily Townsend was fifth. Isabella Haber, in 45.51 seconds, was third in the 300-metr dash. Jayanna Monds took third in the 55-meter dash in 7.88 seconds, edging out the Mustangs’ Mary Catherine Coon (7.89 seconds) for that spot.
Solvay’s Samantha Waters was second in the shot put, throwing it 28’8 ¾”, while Belle Nieves was third with a toss of 27’3 ¼” and Marcellus Meg Blystone (26’7”) was fifth. Katie Harrington, clearing 5 feet in the high jump, also took second, with Mary Catherine Coon third (4’10”) and her sister, Grace Coon, fifth (4’8”) as
The Bearcats also had Mackenzie Lee finish fourth in the 1,000 in 3:25.09, Katie Harrington take fourth in the triple jump (31’5 ¼”) and Maya Martineau take sixth place (47.33 seconds) in the 300. Nicole Antonacci was sixth (14’2 ½”) in the long jump, with Belle Nieves seventh in the high jump.
In the CNYCL National meet, West Genesee’s Carly Benson ran 600 meters in 1:39.35, beating Liverpool’s Ore Akinpelu (1:42.29) by nearly three seconds. Later, Benson joined Maria Matkoski, Elise Dunshee and Lindsay Weaver as the Wildcats, in 9:53.31, pulled away and won the 4×400 relay.
Also, WG was second in the 4×400, where Benson, Matkoski, Valerie Pirro and Megan Delia posted 4:06.63, just behind Fayetteville-Manlius, who won in 4:06.03. Delia, Pirro, Matkoski and Megan Hanahan were third (1:55.79) in the 4×200.
J’Nazia Anderson was second in the shot put, her top throw of 32’1 ¾” just behind Liverpool’s JeNiece Gallishaw (32’3 1/4”) by an inch and a half. Delia earned a third-place long jump of 15’9”, while Pirro took fourth (31’3”) in the triple jump, Hannah Garty fourth (6’6”) in the pole vault and Michaela Kashay sixth (4’4”) in the high jump.
Dunshee made her way to third place in the 1,000 in 3:17.45, with Madeline Lowry (3:27.30) sixth, while Kendall Dombroske was third in the 1,500 in 5:18.90 and Sarah Ferranti (5:30.36) was fifth. Krista Baraniewicz was sixth in the 300 (51.03 seconds). Thi Tran was eighth in the 55 sprint.
In OHSL Division II, Jordan-Elbridge’s Abby Gugel won the 1,500, as her time of 4:55.20 helped her pull away from Cazenovia’s Clara Rowles (5:01.79) and the field. Then Gugel joined Madi Hatt, Mary Elizabeth Dristle and Theresa Dristle to win the 4×800 in 10:38.82, more than 10 seconds ahead of Skaneateles (10:48.86) in the runner-up spot.
Theresa Dristle made her way to third place in the 300 in 1:53.38. J-E’s Julie Hines (7.91 seconds) and Madi Hatt (8.11 seconds) were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 55 sprint, with Hines later sixth in the 300 in 45.08 seconds. Michaela Mills was fifth in the shot put and seventh in the triple jump, with Sam Whalen sixth in the high jump, clearing 4’2”.
