Having proven that it could hang with, and beat, athletes from larger schools, Jamesville-DeWitt’s indoor track and field teams found more success once back among its own crowd.
In fact, the Red Rams claimed both the boys and girls Class A titles during last Wednesday night’s Section III championship meet at SRC Arena, with East Syracuse Minoa getting fourth-place finishes on both sides.
For the J-D girls, it was a runaway, its total of 150 points far clear of anyone as New Hartford (62 points) beat out Mexico (60 points) for second place and ESM, with 41 points, took fourth.
Alexandria Payne won twice for the Rams, starting in the 55-meter hurdles, where in 9.19 seconds she was nearly half a second better than Homer’s Keiana Adkins (9.64 seconds).
Payne also was second to Mexico’s Tori Towndrow in the high jump, as both cleared 5 feet 2 inches, but Towndrow did so with fewer misses.
Elena Haarer was victorious in the 1,000-meter run, finishing in 3:07.97 tobeat ESM’s Juliette Miller (3:14.57), with J-D’s Megan Brown third in 3:27.56. Haarer took third in the 600-meter run (1:45.26), just behind Rachel Fairbanks, who was second in 1:44.18.
In the 4×800 relay, Haarer, Brown, Fairbanks and Casey Keane won in 10:39.28, with the Spartans seeing Miller, Natalie Marra, Olivia Rivera and Kassandra Burr get third place in 11:00.09.
Marra gave the Spartans a victory in the 1,500-meter run in 4:52.31, chased by J-D’s Hannah Butler (5:28.16) and Alisa Salbert (5:42.48). ESM’s Megan Vandewarker was sixth in the 600 in 1:47.76.
Mia Montgomery also won for the Spartans, her triple jump of 34’7 ½” enough to edge past J-D’s Patrece Martin (34’6 ¼” for the top spot). Montgomery also was seventh in the 55-meter hurdles.
Sara Signorelli cleared 8 feet and Gabrielle Tanksley topped 7’6” to finish 1-2 in the girls pole vault. Martin, going 15’8” in the long jump, was second to Mexico’s Jordan Maynes (16’3”)
Keane, Katie Lutz, Addobea Addo and Kaillee Phileo finished second in the 4×200 relay in 4:26.10, with ESM’s Burr, Julia Schug, Katherine Jacobs and Melanie DeFeo fifth in 4:56.30. But the Spartans did beat J-D, 2:01.04 to 2:01.25, to get fourth place in the 4×200 relay.
Hannah Butler was second (10:53.69) and Ayla Erwin was third (12:05.88) in the 3,000-meter run, with Alexandria Street (12:38.47) in fifth place. Alexia Carr, in 46.16 seconds, was second to New Hartford’s Anna Jandura-Cessna (45.17 seconds) in the 300-meter dash.
Mariah Williams, with a shot put throw of 29’3”, finished second by half an inch to Fulton’s Jessica Race (29’3 ½”), with Jessica Pace (26’4”) fifth.
Meanwhile, in the boys Class A sectional meet, J-D managed 86 points, but it was still plenty to pull away from New Hartford (60 points) and Oswego (50 points), with ESM (47 points) again in the fourth-place position.
Patrick Dye led the Red Rams, starting in the 1,000, where he went 2:47.19 to beat a field that included the Spartans’ Jared Henry in third place (2:51.35) and Jim Kenyon (2:52.53) in fifth place.
Then, in the mile, Dye won in 4:42.17, pulling away from Chittenango’s Isaac Czarnecki (4:48.11) in the second spot. Dye, paired with Austin Philleo, Joe DiDomenico and Quentin Curry, finished third in the 4×800 relay in 9:26.62.
ESM saw Jeremy McGrath win the 55 hurdles in 8.17 seconds, well clear of Oswego’s Christian Cabanlig (8.55 seconds) and the field. McGrath, Noah Hodge, Jordan Hodge and Tyler Hodge helped the Spartans, in 1:45.44, beat out J-D (1:45.67) for fourth place in the 4×200 relay.
Will Cote, winning the long jump for J-D, went 20’7 ¼”, with no one else getting past 20 feet as Donavan Coughlin (17’4 ¼”) was fifth. Alex Le cleared 9’6”, giving J-D a win in the boys pole vault.
Cote also took second (6.89 seconds), inches behind Mexico’s Kyler Fenton (6.88 seconds), in the 55 sprint, where McGrath (6.92 seconds) was third. Then, in the triple jump, Cote’s top attempt of 39’11 ¼” beat everyone except Central Valley Academy’s Zach Crim, who won with 42’9 ½”. Almighty Bornfreedom was fifth with 35’11 ¼”.
ESM’s Henry added a second-place finish in the 600 in 1:34.47, with J-D’s Austin Philleo third in 1:34.54. The Rams saw Henry Middleton finish second in the shot put, his best toss of 39 feet trailing Fulton’s Nick Reitz (45’ ¾”) as Evan Baxter (34’4 ½”) was sixth.
Matt Young was third in the 3,200 in 10:39.96 and fourth in the mile in 5:01.04. J-D took fifth in the 4×400 relay in 4:06.72, finishing ahead of ESM, who was sixth in 4:06.72. The Rams’ Jesse Johnson was sixth in the high jump, clearing 5’4”.
