Chased by the likes of Oswego, the West Genesee girls swim team has no intention of letting go of its hold over the CNY Counties League, especially with the Buccaneers ready to pay a visit to Camillus next Wednesday night.
The Wildcats did all of its important work early in last Tuesday night’s 102-74 victory over Fayeteville-Manlius, sweeping the top two spots in each of the first eight events to put the outcome far out of the Hornets’ reach.
Working together, Shannon Cahalan, Erin Dowler, Abby Mullett and Brianna Smith swam the 200 medley relay in 2:02.14, and from there spread out to individual events to do more damage.
Dowler was victorious in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:25.70 to edge Cahalan (2:26.15), while Mullett won the 100 butterfly in 1:07.17, where Chezeki Boudreau (1:08.88) was second.
Olivia Castro tore through the 200 freestyle in 2:07.06, ahead of second-place Cheyenne Scott (2:21.40), and Castro would also prevail in the 100 freestyle in a swift 55.13 seconds, with Sinead Guy (58.28 seconds) in the second spot.
Guy, for her part, won the 50 freestyle, holding off Smith, 26.66 seconds to 27.04, while Gabby Shuron took the 500 freestyle in 6:02.20. Abby Uczen again excelled on the diving board, earning 230.5 points as Michelle Cassidy (142.65 points) was second.
Two nights later, at Le Moyne College, WG took on Cicero-North Syracuse and won again, taking out the Northstars 96-81 with all sorts of contributions from its top swimmers.
Only Kailtin Dunning won twice, prevailing in the 200 freestyle in 2:08.48 before going to the 100 freestyle and speeding to victory in 57.69 seconds. She also joined Dowler, Castro and Jessie Brusa as WG prevailed in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.59.
Individually, Castro went 24.78 seconds in the 100 freestyle, while Cahalan was victorious in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.10. Uczen’s diving total fell to 220.75 points, but she still won that event as Becca Kanoza rolled to first place in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.70. Castro, Cahalan, Guy and Victoria Lee closed the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:57.29.
Now at 4-0 on the season, the Wildcats are all set to put its long league win streak on the line against Oswego, this after the Buccaneers defeated Liverpool 97-87 last Tuesday in order to gain a clear shot at WG’s throne.
