St. Mark’s will host an audibly edible event next Sunday when the church welcomes the Syracuse Vocal Ensemble to the congregation for its Mystical Christmas Pie performance.
Conducted by Artistic Director Robert Cowles, the December Christmas Pie Concert is a 30-plus year tradition intertwining a delicious pie reception (in which home-baked pie is made and served by the members of SVE, a professional-semi-professional choral chamber group) and a performance.
“Those attending A Mystical Christmas Pie can expect music of the season suggesting the mystical aspects of the Christmas story superbly sung, sing carols dispersed throughout the program and sample various tasty pies,” said Norma Tippett, an event organizer. “Baldwinsville residents will experience choral music sung by perhaps the best chamber choral group of its type in Central New York without having to travel to Syracuse.”
Approaching its 40th season, the group is known for its a cappella style as well as performances with chamber instrumental groups.
According to Tippett, SVE’s artistry and range of repertoire have led to many collaborations with the most recent being with Skaneateles Festival and the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Stained Glass Series. The ensemble also commissions and premieres new choral works whenever financially possible, she said.
Tickets for the 3 p.m. performance on Sunday, Dec. 9, are: $20 for adults; $17 for seniors; $5 others. There is a presale discount of $2; visit syracusevocalensemble.org or call 637-3899 for tickets.
