Though it may have served as an anticlimax after prevailing in the first-place showdown over Baldwinsville on Oct. 17, the West Genesee girls swim team made sure it didn’t let down a week later.
The Wildcats met the combined Syracuse city squad Tuesday night in Camillus, won by a score of 103-83 and earned its 24th consecutive meet win, completing another undefeated regular season in the process.
Shannon Cahalan led WG’s efforts, as in the opening 200 medley relay she teamed with Erin Dowler, Brianna Smith and McKell Sampson to win in a time of 2:04.13.
Following that up, Cahalan took first place in the 200 individual medley in 2:23.43, and in the 500 freestyle she beat the field with a clocking of 5:44.76.
Olivia Castro, fresh off her stunning performance against B’ville (which included a pool record in the 100 freestyle), this time won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.73. Kaitlin Dunning took over in the 100 free and won that event in 1:02.73.
Castro did team with Dunning, Smith and Sinead Guy as WG easily won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:43.23. Then, to close out the meet, Cahalan, Jessie Brusa, Jordan Donegan and Hannah Kanoza worked their way to a time of 4:12.27.
West Genesee will now go after team and individual honors in the Section III championships, which start Oct. 31 and run through Nov. 3 at Nottingham High School. Top finishers move on to the Nov. 16-17 state meet at Ithaca College.
