The Manlius Lions Club has dedicated a bench in honor of the late John “Kenny” Barrett, who served the club for more than 35 years.
Local Lions say Barrett’s involvement was a key factor in the success of the club. He served as president on several occasions, and was the first to arrive and last to leave at many of the club’s annual fundraisers. He always brought with him a positive attitude and an unmistakable laugh.
He died June 20, 2011, at 80 years old.
“Even though John is no longer with us, his contributions will not soon be forgotten. He was a true gentleman, a good friend to Manlius and to the Manlius Lions Club,” said Lions Club President Adrian Dunuwila. “This bench is a small gesture to illustrate to all in the Manlius community of our club’s great appreciation for John’s years of service.”
The bench was installed Wednesday, June 6, next to Sno Top in the village of Manlius. Barrett’s wife, Kitty, was the first to try it out.
“It’s just so thoughtful to have him remembered like this, because he was so a part of the community and the club, and absolutely doing everything he could to make every event successful,” she said.
The Manlius Lions Club is celebrating its 65th year of service toward local and international causes, with a focus on helping the sight impaired.
