Uneven weather kept local high school softball teams from consistent on-field work during the April school break. However, Marcellus did get on the field twice and won them both to keep itself undefeated.
In last Tuesday’s non-league game against Fabius-Pompey, the Mustangs struck early and never trailed in a 15-7 win over the Falcons.
Already ahead 1-0, the Mustangs started to take control with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. A four-run rally in the fourth made it 10-1, and though F-P closed the gap a bit, Marcellus scored four more times in the bottom of the fifth, just to be sure.
Meghan Witkowski provided all sorts of power, with a home run, two doubles and five RBIs. Molly MacLachlan doubled and drove in three runs, while Tabby McBride doubled, tripled, walked twice and scored four runs. McBride and Clare Manahan each had one RBI.
Between them, Dominique Weeks and Jennie Delia crossed the plate five times. And though she had a shaky pitching effort, surrendering 12 hits and four walks, MacLachlan still earned the win, striking out six.
In another non-league game Thursday against Onondaga, the Mustangs held off the Tigers 5-3 to make it four wins in a row to open the season.
Claire Manahan struck the first big blow, with a two-run double in the bottom of the second. After OCS’s Kaylee Emerson smashed a solo home run in the fifth to make it 2-1, the Mustangs answered with three runs in the bottom of that frame, including MacLachlan’s own solo shot.
MacLachlan, overall, held the Tigers to six hits, striking out four. Witkowski continued to wield a hot bat, notching two hits on this day as Shannon Donahue scored a pair of runs.
Marcellus returns to OHSL Liberty division play with games against Skaneateles and Westhill before taking on Bishop Grimes and Auburn in back-to-back weekend contests.
