A water main break that occurred the afternoon of Wednesday, March 21 has caused all academic buildings in Cazenovia Central School District to close for Thursday, March 22. Burton Street Elementary will also be closed Friday, March 23.
A boil-water advisory was issued for all residents of Burton and Clark streets, which was rescinded the afternoon of Friday, March 23.
“Certainly it is an inconvenience for everybody, but at the time we heard about it, there was still a potential of the area being expanded to check the water,” said Cazenovia Central School District Superintendent Bob Dubik. “It was more of a precautionary measure and to give parents notice so they could arrange daycare and whatever they need to for their children.”
According to Village of Cazenovia Public Works Administrator Bill Carr, workers of a construction company hired by the Madison County Sewer District accidentally ruptured the water main around 1:45 p.m. March 21 as they dug on Clark Street.
Water was shut off to approximately 60 nearby homes, and was later restored at 5 p.m. Carr said about 200,000 gallons of water was lost.
“Everything is fixed. We just have to take samples to make sure there are no problems with the water,” Carr said. “Sampling will end Friday, and we should know by Friday evening whether we can lift the boil-water act.”
Dubik said the tentative plan for Friday is to have all middle school and high school students report to their respective buildings as usual, however Burton Street Elementary School will remain closed.
All elementary school faculty and staff will report to the art room at Burton Street at 8 a.m. on Friday.
Outdoor athletic practices will be held as scheduled. More details will be posted as they are made available.
