In its first serious tournament action of the season, the Skaneateles wrestling team made a strong effort at last Saturday’s 36th annual Portville Invitational. The Lakers picked up 176.5 points, putting them in third place in a 14-team field, just behind the runner-up, host Portville, who had 178 points. Southwestern (Jamestown) won with 232 points. Kevin Pembridge emerged with the championship at 140 pounds. He beat Gunnar VanCuren (Portville) and Dylan Hansen (Hornell) to reach the finals, then quickly prevailed in the title match as he took just 1:12 to pin his Cattaraugus opponent, Jesse Perry. Tyler Saunders made his way to the 119-pound final, only to fall to FIllmore’s Coty Voss. Jacob Valentino also had a second place finish, advancing to the 145-pound title match before Ryan Grey (Cattaraugus) beat him with a third-period pin. Elsewhere, Jon Leubner went 4-1 and claimed third place at 152 pounds, while Chris Wise did the same at 171 pounds by pinning Franklinville’s Joshua McKune in the second period of the consolation bracket final. Josh Brillo (96 pounds) and Ryan Dick (125 pounds) both had fourth-place efforts, while Neil Ruggles beat Garren McDaniels (Hornell) for fifth place at 160 pounds and, at 285 pounds, Garrett Navarolli pinned Rich Eldred (Bucktail) to also finish fifth. Jacob Brillo (160 pounds) and Conor Rourke (215 pounds) each finished sixth, with Dominic Petrocci (135 pounds) going 2-2.
