With the temperatures ideal and rain holding off, the West Genesee girls track and field team took charge of its opening meet of the 2010 spring campaign, putting together a 76.5-64.5 victory over the Auburn Maroons.
At the heart of the Wildcats’ effort was its sweep of distance running, and everyone contributed, including Katie Bott, who started by winning the 400-meter dash in 1:00.3.
Eighth-grader Laura Leff was victorious in the 800-meter run (2:31.4), while Abby Kastick neded 5:30.8 to prevail at 1,500 meters. In a close 3,000-meter event, Amy Hannahan, in a clocking of 12:12 flat, held off Auburn’s Meghan Guzewicz (12:12.9) at the wire.
Hannahan and Leff joined Kelly Powell and Emily Barriere to take the 4×800 relay in 10:26.8, while Bott, Barriere, Powell and Alex Incaudo covered the 4×400 relay in 4:21.4. Brianna McGraw won the 100-meter dash (13.1 seconds) and Nicole Baz took the 200-meter dash in 26.6 seconds.
In field events, WG broke through with Erica Fitch throwing the discus 89 feet 6 inches and Maureen McInerney taking the triple jump, going 28 feet 11 inches.
When the boys Wildcats took its turn against Auburn, it also had a successful result as it beat the Maroons by a score of 82-59.
Matt Ulrich and Jake Lafaver each won twice. Ulrich ran the 110 high hurdles in 16.4 seconds and also claiming the 400 hurdles in 1:02.4, while Lafaver sprinted to first in the 200 (23.4 seconds) and needed 53.6 seconds to win the 400-meter dash.
In distance running, Sam Reedy took the 800 (2:07.9), Billy Gabriel prevailed in the mile (4:57.3) and John Delallo needed 10:32.3 to win at 3,200 meters. Gabriel, Reedy, Jake Lafaver and Zach Lafaver teamed up in the 4×400 (3:48.8) as Delallo, Matt Gonnella, Martin Leff and
Matt Serrao ran the 4×800 in 8:49.0.
For the most part, Auburn dominated the field events, but Jeremy Cantello provided a Wildcat exception, clearing 10 feet 6 inches to win the pole vault.
