In addition to the J-E Community Theatre’s production of “South Pacific” this year, volunteer and civic groups will hold performances throughout the area in coming weeks.
The Marcellus Community Band will give it’s annual free concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday July 29 outside at Driver Middle School. Led by Marcellus High School band director Michael Cirmo, the community band consists of about 55 members ranging from around 12 to 70 years old.
The band is open to any community members, and Cirmo said many college students will return in the summertime to play with the band. The band rehearses three times before the annual performance.
“It’s probably just as much social as it is musical,” Cirmo said. “It’s fun.”
In case of rain, the concert will be moved in doors at DMS.
The Marcellus Summer Youth Theatre will present a musical review as their public performance this year, at 7 p.m. Thursday July 30 in the Driver Middle School cafeteria. The show will feature songs and skits from popular Broadway hits including, “Bye, Bye, Birdie,” “The Pajama Game,” and “Hairspray,” and “Grease,” all performed by the participants of the summer youth theatre day program. The stars of this year’s show range from 9- to 14-years-old, and are directed by Maryellen Dance, herself a former summer youth theatre participant.
Dance said that the laid-back and fun atmosphere of the summer youth theatre program allows kids who would not otherwise try the theatre to experience it while having fun.
“A lot of kids are coming because soccer camp is over, or they don’t have anything else to do — and that’s a good thing because it sparks their interest in musicals,” Dance pointed out. Dance is assisted with instructing the program this year by Alex Schoeneck.
