Washington Square Neighborhood Task Force and the Washington Square Park Committee are pleased to announce the rededication of the Kirkpatrick Monument Washington Square Park on Wednesday, July 1 at 6:30 p.m.
“We are grateful to the New York State government for helping to fund the restoration of this magnificent piece of Syracuse History”, said Thomas Buckel, Onondaga County Legislator, who will welcome and introduce the speakers at the rededication.
The Invocation and Benediction will be offered by Reverend Jon Werner, Administer, St. John the Baptist Church. Speaker will include Senator John DeFancisco, Gregg Tripoli, Executive Director for the Onondaga Historical Association, Patrick Hogan, 2nd District, Common Council, Chief Oran Lyons, Onondaga Nation, and Jon Anderson, President of the Friends of Onondaga Lake Park. The Syracuse Parks & Recreation All Star Band will accompany the rededication.
Dr. William Kilpatrick was superintendent of the Onondaga Salt Springs from 1805-1806 and from1810-1831. The foundation was erected in accordance with his son’s last will and testament, dated October 1889. He asked that the fountain theme symbolize the Onondaga Indians’ discovery to the white man the salt springs as related in the historical narrative of the relations of the Jesuits and later by the historian Parkman.
