Pat Corbin, a former baseball standout at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, could be on his way to the big time.
The Los Angeles Angels selected Corbin, a left-handed pitcher, last Tuesday night at the end of the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft, 80th overall.
Corbin, who turns 20 on July 19, just completed his season at Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Fla. The school has turned out several major leaguers, including Russell Martin, a two-time All-Star catcher for the Angels’ crosstown rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Corbin went there after a stint at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica.
In 2009 at Chipola, Corbin had 86 strikeouts in 74 innings of work. He had become Florida’s top junior college prospect. At 6-3 and 170 pounds, Corbin has a fastball that reaches 92 miles per hour, plus a breaking ball and changeup.
During his time with the Northstars, Corbin never lost a decision, going 14-0 with a 1.94 earned run average and 139 career strikeouts. He was a 2007 All-Central New York selection as a senior, when he went 8-0.
