At least the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team knew what kind of things it needed to work on going into the playoffs because it was coming off back-to-back defeats.
Right after Jordan-Elbridge knocked off the Lakers 18-17 on May 20, the Lakers went back to the road Friday and struggled even more against Marcellus, absorbing a 16-10 loss to the Mustangs.
Sporting a 13-4 record and its own championship aspirations, Marcellus pushed the tempo from the start, showing good variety in its attack as it worked its way to a 9-6 advantage by halftime.
Cazenovia (13-5) simply could not put the sustained scoring run it needed, so it watched as the Mustangs gradually doubled its margin in the second half.
In defeat, Gabby Jaquith (four goals, one assist) and Kara Cannizzaro (three goals, two assists) both had five points. Julie Gregg scored twice, with Lindsey Nourse getting the other goal. Kassie Kleine and Katie Kleine both had assists.
Marcellus had five different players put up multiple goals. Leea Sinay had four goals, with Nora Barry and Kate Gosson each finding the net three times. Barry added two assists, with Stephanie O’Rourke and Meghan Connors each getting two goals and one assist.
