Both of Jamesville-DeWitt’s track and field teams found their way to the top of the standings during Tuesday’s Onondaga High School League Freedom division championship meet at Chittenango High School.
The girls Red Rams accumulated 203 points, nearly doubling the total of runner-up Phoenix (106 points) as the host Bears (103 points) finshed third.
J-D swept the relays, taking the 4×100 (52.05 seconds), 4×400 (4:17.98) and 4×800 (10:07.98) relays as Amanda Tan, Marae Tearney, Linsay Royer, Natalie Mannion, Katy Pieri, Liz Pieri, Grace Bradshaw, Paige Morrow, Eileen Cody and Rebecca Doss all took part.
Tearney would win the 100-meter dash, holding off Chittenango’s Courtney Dyer, 13.09 seconds to 13.14, and also take third in the 200-meter dash (27.56 seconds) as Tan finished fifth. Tearney later had a second (30 feet 11 1/4 inches) in the shot put.
Morrow beat the field in the 800-meter run, winning in 2:31.43, while Cody sped to victory in the 3,000-meter run in 11:07.8. Ameena Dye was second in the 1,500-meter run (5:08.82) and third in the 3,000 (11:34.96) behind Cody.
Courtney Ellis ran to victory in the 400-meter hurdles (1:15.25), while Royer took second in the 400-meter dash (1:02.99) and Mannion (1:03.78) finished third. Danielle Doss was second in the pentathlon (1,603 points) and Rebecca Bergman got fifth in the 2,000 steeplechase.
The Rams also won three field events. Bradshaw won the triple jump with 32 feet, while Marissa Colavecchio cleared 8 feet 6 inches in the pole vault. Tan finished second in both events. Brianna Young won the discus (87 feet 9 inches) as Liz Pieri (4 feet 11 inches) and Maggie Fuller (4 feet 10 inches) took second and third, respectively, in the high jump.
East Syracuse-Minoa, in fifth place (47 points), saw Meghan Visser win the steeplechase in 7:57.22 after a fourth in the 1,500. Charlotte Visser was third in the pentathlon as the Spartans also claimed third in the 4×100 (53.91 seconds) and 4×800 (10:43.76) relays.
In the closer boys OHSL Freedom meet, J-D needed 151 points to fend off Fulton, who was second with 135 points. ESM got 60 points and finished fourth.
Bumkuth Jiak won twice on his own, taking the 800 (2:00.83) and pulling away to beat the field in the mile in 4:26.75. Jiak, Austin Davis, Tim Kendrick and Max Smith combined to win the 4×800 relay in 8:31.65 as Ben Kier finished third and Dan Driscoll fourth in the 3,200.
David Salbert had a top triple jump of 41 feet 8 inches, while Kendrick (38 feet 10 inches) finished third. In the long jump, Salbert got second place (19 feet 5 inches) as Curtis Walker took fifth.
Mychal Weekes won the high jump, clearing 6 feet 1 inch, while Joseph Lee cleared 10 feet and was first in the pole vault. Weekes also had a second in the discus (123 feet 5 inches) as Peter Andersen (42 feet 5 1/2 inches) and Michael Paul (40 feet 1 1/2 inches) got second and third, respectively, in the shot put.
Up in the springs, Ira Griffin finished second at 200 meters (23.61 seconds) and fourth at 100 meters (11.75 seconds) as Eric Semmel got to fifth in the 400 hurdles. Salbert, Semmel, Walker and Griffin were second in the 4×100 (44.70 seconds), just behind Phoenix (44.41 seconds) as J-D also had a fourth (3:45.02) in the 4×400.
ESM had success in the long jump, where Lenny Kerznowski won with a top leap of 19 feet 10 1/2 inches, beating Salbert. Zaid Jinadu was fourth in the triple jump (38 feet 2 inches), with Kerznowski fifth, as Jinadu also took sixth in the long jump.
Louis Sharp had 2,165 points for second place in the pentathlon as Dylan Courbet (11:07.10) edged teammate Pete Ferstler (11:07.29) for fourth in the 3,000 steeplechase. ESM’s 4×400 relay quartet of Ferstler, Christian Larrabee, Mike Coogan and Chad Goyer finished third in 3:43.74. The Spartans were fourth in the 4×100 and 4×800, too.
